PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Two players finished with a hat trick on Wednesday afternoon as the St. John Fisher College women's soccer made its season debut to the tune of a 9-0 drubbing of visiting Buffalo State inside Growney Stadium. With the win, Fisher, improved to 1-0 on the year while the Bengals dipped to 0-1 in the early going.
The Cardinals' nine goals marked their highest output since defeating The College of Staten Island, 8-0, to begin the 2006 season and is among the most goals ever scored in a single game in program history.
Senior
Carli Kovarik led the way with three goals and an assist in the win while
Kyra Kenyon impressed in her collegiate debut with three goals of her own.
Madison Scull and
Emma Spelman each finished with a goal and an assist while
Kayla Rhude found the back of the net once.
Fisher opened the scoring early as Kovarik and
Megan Letta threaded the needle to Spelmen who deposited her first-career goal into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in 16th minute.
The Cardinals doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Kovarik scored on a penalty kick before Rhude followed suit with a goal from 20 yards that found the corner in the 39th minute.
Leading by three to begin the second half of play, the offensive production continued as Spelman found Kovarik on the far side for her 20th career goal to make it a four-score affair. Kovarik would strike again just six minutes later on a feed from
Kathleen Rachwal to make it 5-0.
From there, head coach
Molly Romano's bench came to life with Kenyon scoring three straight tallies in a span of 14 minutes to push the Cardinals' advantage to 8-0 late in the game. With the game well in hand, Fisher found the back of the net again in the 84th minute when Scull worked her way through the defense before unloading a shot past the Bengals' keeper.
In all, Fisher was credited with 32 shots including eight from Kovarik. Scull and Rhude each had five shots in the win while Kenyon accounted for four in her first collegiate contest.
In goal,
Halle Tickell moved to 1-0 after making two saves in 68 minutes before giving way to
Olivia Relyea who played the final 22 minutes.
Up next, the Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to Pennsylvania at 11 a.m. on Saturday to take on the Washington and Jefferson Presidents in another non-conference tilt.
