PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The third-seeded St. John Fisher College men's tennis team had its season ended on Friday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to second-seeded Nazareth College, 5-4, in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Championship at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the defeat, Fisher concluded the 2021 season with a 4-6 overall record while the Golden Flyers advanced to Sunday's championship match with top-seeded Houghton College.
After falling at first doubles, Fisher leveled the contest at one point apiece with an 8-5 victory at second doubles led by
Cameron Campbell and
Sean Danahy.
Trailing 2-1 heading into individual play, Fisher lost at first singles, but recovered and scored in three straight flights to jump ahead in the contest at 4-3.
Kyle Gorman posted a 6-2, 7-5 decision at second singles before Campbell earned his second point of the day following a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at third singles. Senior
Jordan O'Connell battled through three sets and came out on top, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at fourth singles to put Fisher in a position to win as the Cardinals needed one point over the final two pairings.
With just two individual matches left to decide the winner, Nazareth bested
Anthony Molosag at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-3 and would earn the fifth and deciding point at sixth singles as
Jon Sutherland fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
