HENRIETTA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team ran its winning streak to six games on Wednesday as the Cardinals defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 17-12, in a non-conference nine-inning affair at Tiger Stadium. With the win, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, improved to 12-2 on the year while the Tigers fell to 4-5 overall.
Noah Campanelli, who was named to D3baseball.com's Team of the Week on Tuesday continued to rake as the sophomore went 3-for-6 in the win with an RBI and two runs scored while
Justin Graham continued to creep up on Fisher's all-time hits record after going 3-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI and three more runs scored. To date, he needs just three hits to surpass Andy Campbell and Scott Eisenmenger's all-time mark of 225 career hits.
Ryan Simmons had three hits on the day including a double as the graduate student drove in three and crossed home plate twice.
Adam Zebrowski was 2-for-3 on the afternoon and hit his second home run of the week. Zebrowski also drove in three and drew three walks.
Brian Norsen had two hits in six at-bats along with three runs driven in while
Michael Beimel collected two hits and four RBI.
After falling behind 4-0 heading to the top of the second, Fisher roared back with five runs on two hits with Simmons getting the rally started with a two-run single up the middle before Beimel, Campanelli and Graham each plated a run to make it 5-4, Fisher.
The lead remained in the Cardinals' hands until the bottom of the fourth when RIT tied the game on a sac fly, but the visitors would retake the advantage in the top of the fifth after a leadoff walk by Zebrowski came around to score on an RBI-single to left by Beimel to make it 6-5.
In the home half of the fifth, the Cardinals were poised to work around a leadoff double, but the Tigers came away with a two-out infield single to knot the game at six runs aside.
With the lineup turning over in the top of the sixth, Fisher sent nine hitters to the dish and plated four runs on four hits with the big blow coming off the bat of Beimel in the form of a two-run single through the right side as Fisher took a 10-6 lead into the home half of the frame.
After giving a run back in the bottom of the sixth, Fisher tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh
Luke Duffy and Simmons each driving in a run to set Fisher up with a 12-7 cushion.
The visitors struck again in the top of the eighth with five more runs on four hits and an error to hold a 10-run edge, 17-7. After Beimel reached on an infield error, Camapanelli and Graham each singled to load the bases for Norsen who belted a two-run single to left to make it 14-7. With two in and two still on, Zebrowski stepped in and crushed a three-run shot before the Tigers could retire the side.
Holding a comfortable lead in the bottom of the ninth, Fisher's bullpen was tagged with five runs on four hits before nailing down the final out to hold on for a 17-12 win.
Hunter Walsh started for Fisher and went 4.0 innings as the right-hander was hit for five runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts.
Tim Geissel was credited with the win after throwing 3.0 innings of relief where the senior allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.
Rylan Baker pitched a perfect eighth inning while
Jack Delaney surrendered five runs on four hits in the ninth.
Fisher will look to continue its winning ways at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday when it heads to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader.
