PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team ran its winning streak to five games on Monday as the Cardinals swept another Empire 8 doubleheader against Keuka College at Dugan Yard. With the wins, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, improved to 11-2 on the year and 4-0 in the Empire 8 while the Wolves dipped to 0-4 on both fronts.
FISHER 17, KEUKA 1
After plating four runs in the bottom of the first, Fisher's lead grew to 10 through five innings of play. After giving one back to the Wolves in the top of the sixth, Fisher sent 12 hitters to the dish and plated seven runs on three hits and two errors with
Ryan Simmons going 2-for-2 in the frame with a double and three RBI to give Fisher a 16-run cushion.
In all, the Cardinals accounted for 14 hits in the win led by
James Ward, Jr. who had four hits in four at-bats along with a double, four RBI and a walk.
Brian Norsen was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a pair of runs scored while Simmons had two hits on the day with a double, four RBI and two runs.
Adam Zebrowski was 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs scored while
Noah Campanelli, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week earlier in the day, was 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.
Senior
RJ Kuruts turned in another solid performance on the mound as the right-hander moved to 5-0 after going 7.0 innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits. The Forest City, Pa. native fanned 10 in the win and pitched an immaculate fifth inning.
FISHER 13, KEUKA 9
After yielding a run in the top of the first, Fisher roared back with six runs over the next two frames to hold a five-run lead heading to the third.
The Wolves answered in the top of the third after scoring a pair of two-out runs to cut the gap to three, but the Cardinals got one back in the home half of the fourth when Zebrowski crushed a solo home run well over the bullpen in left to make it 7-3 in favor of the home team.
Keuka continued to connect in the top of the fifth and pulled to within one after scoring three runs on three hits, but the Wolves were unable to hold Fisher at bay for long as the Cardinals used four hits including a solo shot from Campanelli to score three runs to make it 10-7 heading to the seventh.
Fisher added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh frame with three more runs on three more hits all of which came with two outs to open up a 13-7 edge.
Keuka would plate a pair in the top of the eighth, but the Cardinals' bullpen closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Zebrowski had a career afternoon in the nightcap as the catcher went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Campanelli had three more hits including a double, a home run and two RBI while Norsen finished the game with three hits in four at-bats.
Justin Graham inched closer to setting Fisher's all-time record for career hits after going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Michael Poirier took the ball to start and went 4.0 innings where he allowed six earned runs on six hits to go along with seven strikeouts.
Connor McHugh (1-0) earned the win in relief after going 3.0 innings and giving up one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
Joseph Tronetti pitched the eighth and was tagged for two runs while
Marty Williams tossed a scoreless ninth and fanned one in all.
The Cardinals will go for their sixth straight victory at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Henrietta to take on the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in a non-conference, nine-inning affair.
