PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team clinched the third overall seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship as the Cardinals completed the regular season sweep of visiting Alfred University, 6-3, at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the win, Fisher improved to 3-5 on the year and 3-4 in the Empire 8 standings while the Saxons dipped to 2-8, 1-6, respectively.
Prior to the start of the match, Fisher honored and thanked its senior class including
Jordan O'Connell and
Jon Sutherland as the duo has given so much to the program over the last four years.
The Cardinals took two of three points in doubles play with
Sean Danahy and
Cameron Campbell pulling out an 8-2 decision at second doubles while Sutherland teamed with
Anthony Molosag for an 8-6 triumph at third doubles.
In singles action, the Cardinals claimed four more flights beginning with a win at first singles as Danahy held on for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win.
Kyle Gorman followed suit at second singles with a straight-set win, 7-5, 6-2 while O'Connell overcame a 6-3 loss in the first set and rebounded with 6-4, 6-0 wins over the next two sets to garner a point.
Molosag was a winner at fifth singles in similar fashion after bouncing back from an opening set loss to win the flight, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Fisher will close out its regular season on the road at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to Utica to do battle with the Pioneers in an Empire 8 match.
