ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season on Friday as the Cardinals upended Alfred University, 7-2, in an Empire 8 match inside the Murray Athletic Center at Elmira College. With the win, Fisher climbed to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference standings while the Saxons closed out the day at 0-5 and 0-3, respectively.
Fisher picked up two of three points in doubles play with
Jordan O'Connell and
Kyle Gorman winning at first doubles, 8-3.
Sean Danahy and
Cameron Campbell came out on top at second doubles with an 8-3 decision.
In singles play, Danahy recovered after falling in the first set and leveled the flight with a 6-3 win in the second. The sophomore closed out the frame and picked up a point for the Cardinals with a 7-6 win in the third and deciding set.
Campbell also pulled out a three-set win at third singles, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, while O'Connell posted a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at fourth singles.
Andrew Cegielski made quick work of his opponent at sixth singles with two straight set wins, 6-0, 6-0.
Fisher will look to build on its momentum at 1 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Utica College inside Mendon Racquet and Pool Club.
