Women's Soccer Toppled by Alfred in Empire 8 Quarterfinal

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The third-seeded St. John Fisher College women's soccer team had its season come to an end of Tuesday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to sixth-seeded Alfred University in the quarterfinal round of the Empire 8 Championship on the pitch inside Growney Stadium.  With the defeat, Fisher closed out the 2020-21 campaign at 2-3-1 while the Saxons improved to 1-5-0 and will move on to the semifinal round where they will face second-seeded Russell Sage College at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Albany.

The Cardinals were up against an early deficit as Fisher was whistled for a foul inside the box to set up a penalty shot for the Saxons.  With Lila Platt in goal, Alfred sent a shot to the low left side of the cage that found its mark to make it 1-0 in the visitors' favor in just the 15th minute.

With the second half underway, Fisher looked to push the pace as the Cardinals peppered Alfred's backline with three shots in a span of two minutes.

As the match wore on, Fisher looked to level the game as Carli Kovarik delivered a strike from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and ducked out of bounds to keep it a one-goal affair.

Facing an uphill climb and with time running out, the Cardinals were awarded a corner kick in the 79th minute and kept the pressure on in the offensive zone with three shots over the final 10 minutes, but the home team was unable to net the equalizer as the Saxons held on for the upset.

In all, Fisher was credited with having taken 20 shots led by Becky Mack who fired four in the loss.  Isabella Guarracino had three shots on the day while Alexis Gossage, Hanna LaRocca and Kovarik each had two.

Platt played all 90 minutes in goal for Fisher and made three saves overall.
