Alexander Nets Game-Winner in Second OT as No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Mackenzie Alexander played the hero on Saturday for the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team in one of the longest games in program history as the sophomore scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to lift the No. 12 Cardinals to an 11-10 win over SUNY Geneseo at Knight Field.  With the win, Fisher improved to 8-1 on the year while the Knights suffered their first defeat of the 2021 campaign and fell to 2-1.

Facing a four-goal gap just one minute into the second half, Fisher quickly turned the tables and rattled off three goals in a span of 4:20 including two free position marks from Logan Chase and Alyssa Sabotka to make it a one-goal game.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead, Geneseo reclaimed the momentum with four unanswered goals, but the Cardinals were not to be outdone as head coach Linda Michele's squad tallied four straight goals of its own including a free position goal by Chase with one second remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

After dominating the first extra frame, Fisher won the opening draw of the second and pushed the ball into the offensive zone where Chase whipped a shot wide, but the Cardinals backed up to extend the possession.  The hustle paid off as Alexander blew past the Geneseo defense and unloaded a shot into the back of the net to extend the Cardinals' winning streak to three games.

Alyssa Sproule led the team with four goals and 11 shots while Alexander finished with three goals six draw controls and two caused turnovers.  Chase added two goals and three ground balls while Kathleen Salanger chipped in with a goal and an assist.  Sydney DeGirloamo contributed an assist and six draws in the win.

Fisher's defense, which held Geneseo without a shot in overtime, forced 14 caused turnovers on the day led by Alexander, Chase and Shannon Foster who had two apiece.

In goal, Claudia Mocciaro moved to 8-1 on the year after making eight saves over 71 minutes of play.

Up next, Fisher will host Alfred University on Tuesday evening on the turf inside Growney Stadium in an Empire 8 showdown.  First draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
