UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team went on a program record-breaking scoring tear on Thursday afternoon in the Cardinals' 11-0 rout of Utica College in their 2021 spring season opener at Gaetano Stadium. The reigning Empire 8 Regular Season Champion Cardinals begin their season at 1-0, while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.
The Cardinals got the party started nearly three minutes into play, behind All-American
Bre Socker, who scored on a penalty corner assist from
Allison Bartlett. Socker scored three more times over the course of the contest and added two assists to the scorebook. The Liverpool native found the back of the Utica cage once in each quarter of play.
Gianna Palma assisted Socker twice and had four goals of her own in the game, with her first goal coming at the three-and-a-half-minute mark in the first quarter. The junior added back-to-back goals before the intermission and added her finale in the third quarter after knocking in a rebounded
Alyssa Andres shot.
Ashley Wightman,
Sam Choate, and
Rileigh Luste all added their first career goals as Cardinals in the 60-minute affair. Fisher outshot their opponent 24-2, 23 of which landed on target.
Fisher goaltender
Sophia Trozzi logged the game's full duration in net, saving both of the shots that she faced. The freshman was awarded her first career win in the offense's big night.
With 11 goals, the Cardinals have set the program's single-game team scoring record, beating their previous best, 10 goals, set on October 12, 2019 at Sage. Fisher's six assists also marked the team's most points in a game since that same game with 28, in which the Cardinals recorded its all-time best, 30.
Field hockey hosts its season opener next Saturday, April 3 when the Cardinals welcome current Empire 8 Tournament Champions, Hartwick, to Growney Stadium for a 5 P.M. Empire 8 showdown.
