Baseball Falls to Rochester in Mid-Week Pairing

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team suffered a 9-1 setback on Thursday as the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, fell to visiting University of Rochester in a nine-inning tilt at Dugan Yard.  With the loss, Fisher dropped to 6-2 on the year while the Yellowjackets climbed above .500 at 3-2.

Michael Poirier started on the hill for Fisher and was hit with the loss after giving up three earned runs on four hits over 6.0 innings of work.  The right-hander struck out five and did not yield a walk.  Brandon Roberts pitched 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on six hits before being lifted for Tim Geissel who recorded the final two outs.

Rochester had it going early as the leadoff hitter reached after being plunked before the next hitter deposited a two-run opposite field shot to hold a 2-0 lead.

After tacking on a run in the top of the third, the Yellowjackets scored two more in the fifth after a wild pitch to make it 5-0.  The visitors would blow the game open in the ninth with four runs on four hits to hold a 9-0 edge.

In the home half of the ninth, Fisher was able to get a run back and had a runner in scoring position, but Rochester retired the next two hitters in order to close out the contest.

In all, Fisher managed just three hits with Adam Zebrowski, Michael Beimel and Luke Duffy accounting for the offense.

Fisher will look to re-ignite its bats at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday when Oswego State visits Dugan yard for another non-conference doubleheader.
