PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team had its six-game winning streak halted on Monday as the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, fell to the RIT Tigers, 8-3, in a non-conference affair at Dugan Yard. With the loss, Fisher closed out the day at 6-1 while the Tigers improved to 3-2.
After exchanging zeroes over the first two innings of play, Fisher got on the board first in the bottom of the third after
Brian Norsen lifted a shallow fly behind first base that found a hole as
Justin Graham and
Patrick Kravitz scored to make it 2-0.
The Cardinals tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth after an infield error loaded the bases for
James Murphy who drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it a three-run game heading to the top of the sixth.
Trailing 3-0 with Fisher's starter still in the game, RIT was able to get a run back after a leadoff double came around to score, but
Alec Teska was able to limit the damage as the Cardinals retired the side ahead 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, RIT took advantage of Fisher's bullpen to the tune of two runs and would forge ahead in the eighth inning after plating five runs on four hits to hold an 8-3 advantage.
With just three outs left in play and a five-run hole to climb out of, Fisher put two on in the bottom of the ninth, but RIT escaped the jam with three straight outs.
Teska did not factor in the decision despite going six strong innings and allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
Michael Heilig allowed two runs in two-thirds of inning before giving way to
Rylan Baker who was hit with the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning.
Harrison Brown allowed a run in the loss and
Joseph Tronetti recorded four outs and did not yield a hit.
Fisher will look to start a new winning streak at 2 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts the University of Rochester at Dugan Yard.
