ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team was upended on Sunday as the Cardinals fell to Russell Sage College, 3-2, in an Empire 8 contest held at Albany College of Pharmacy Stadium. With the defeat, Fisher fell to 1-1 on the year and in the conference standings while the Gators improved to 2-0 overall and against Empire 8 opponents.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the 12th minute after
Alexis Gossage delivered a strike to the right side of the goal for her first-career tally that staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead.
Fisher would double its advantage in the 20th minute when
Christina Van Allen corralled a rebound and buried it into the back of the net for her first-career goal as Fisher led 2-0 midway through the first half.
Ahead 2-0, the Cardinals looked to add to their lead. Fisher peppered the Gators' keeper with 11 shots over the next 20 minutes, but was unable to add to its advantage as both teams broke for halftime with the Cardinals up by two goals.
Coming out of the break, Sage quickly erased its deficit with back-to-back goals in a span of 51 seconds to tie the contest at two goals apiece. With momentum favoring the Gators, Sage struck again in 58th minute off a direct kick to hold a 3-2 edge.
As the game wore on, Fisher looked to push the pace, as both Gossage and
Carli Kovarik put shots on net, but the Gators were in position each time to hold the Cardinals at bay.
In all, Fisher was credited with having taken 22 shots led by Kovarik who had nine in the loss. Van Allen finished with four shots overall while Gossage had three shots on the day.
Lila Platt (1-1) took the loss in goal. She made six stops over 90 minutes of action.
Up next, Fisher will make its home debut at Growney Stadium at 6 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Alfred University in an Empire 8 clash.
