ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Daniel Cook finished with a double-double on Thursday as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team held off Rochester Institute of technology, 65-51, inside Kidera Gymnasium as part of the fifth annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. With the win, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, evened its season record at 2-2 while the Tigers ended the day at 0-1 on the year.
Cook, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week on Monday, posted a game-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with 19 rebounds. Senior
Brendan Trapper added 13 points and eight boards in the win while
Sean Williams chipped in with seven points, three rebounds and three assists over 31 minutes.
Matt Panara netted eight points off the bench while
Connor Williams and
Ian Duncan combined to produce nine points.
After holding a double-digit lead at the break, Fisher quickly pushed its advantage to 20 points after orchestrating a 9-1 run fueled by four points from Trapper to open up a 43-23 edge with 12 minutes still showing on the clock.
The lead would grow to as many as 24 points following a jumper in the paint from Cook before the Tigers countered with 10 unanswered points of their own to pull to within 14, 53-39, with under five minutes to go.
Facing a steep climb and with time winding down, RIT was never able to mount a significant comeback bid as the Cardinals buried all four of their free throw attempts over the final 1:32 to claim the 14-point win.
As a team, Fisher was 22-for-62 from the field with 22 points coming inside the paint. Head coach
Mike Grosodonia II's team took care of business at the charity stripe after going 17-for-20 and out-rebounded its opponent, 50-44. In all, Fisher had 13 assists in the win and came away with eight steals on the defensive end of the floor.
The Cardinals are back in action at 6 p.m. on Saturday as they close out the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout against the University of Rochester inside Kidera Gymnasium at Nazareth College.
