ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team earned their third victory of the year against the University of Rochester Saturday evening 76-60, inside Kidera Gymnasium as part of the fifth annual Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. With the victory, Fisher improves to 3-2 while Rochester drops to 2-2 on the season.
As the game tipped off, Fisher fell behind as the Yellowjackets led 9-4. Fisher was able to battle back behind two
Sean Williams 3-pointers to take a 14-13 lead. The game continued to stay close as the Cardinals trailed 35-31 with two minutes to go in the half.
Trailing by four points with the clock winding down,
Ryan Gentile turned defense into offense with a steal and outlet pass to
Daniel Cook that lead to a fast break dunk giving the Cardinals a 36-35 advantage heading into halftime.
With the second half underway, Fisher kept its lead and didn't look back.
Brendan Trapper helped lead an 11-4 run early in the second half as the senior was able to score nine of Fisher's 11 points during the burst to give the Cardinals a 51-42 cushion.
With under 10 minutes left to play in the game, the Cardinals' defense continued to be the difference maker as Williams forced a Rochester turnover that allowed
Jack Foley to score on a fast break to give Fisher a 57-45 advantage.
From there, Trapper was able to come out of a timeout and knock down a jumper to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the game - a 17-point lead. In the final minutes, Fisher held on to the double-digit lead and dribbled out the clock, securing the 16-point victory 76-60.
As a team, the Cardinals were able to force 18 turnovers with Cook leading the way with four steals. The junior also led the team in scoring with 23 points and rebounds with 12 to earn his third-straight double-double. Williams finished with a season-high 19 points and seven assists, as he was 3-for-4 from 3-point territory and 7-for-11 from the field. Trapper ended the night with 14 points while by Gentile chipped in with eight points of his own.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as they return home to take on Buffalo State at home.
