Football Looking for All-Important Fifth Win Saturday at Utica

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College football team will look to close out the regular season with a win on Saturday as the Cardinals head to Utica College for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Charles Gaetano Stadium.  Head coach Paul Vosburgh's team enters the game with four wins overall and needs just one more victory to become eligible to be selected for an ECAC Bowl game later this month.

GOLDEN DAYS: The traditional gift for 50 years of marriage is gold and this year marks the golden anniversary of the St. John Fisher College football program.  Founded in 1971 as a club team, Fisher has won nearly 280 games and boasts a winning percentage of nearly .600 in that time.  The College has enjoyed eight seasons with at least 10 wins, six Empire 8 conference title, five NCAA berths, three club national championships and hundreds of All-Conference honorees.

WHEN LAST WE MET: The Cardinals and Pioneers last faced off against one another on October 12th, 2019 with Utica coming out ahead, 34-28, despite being out-gained by Fisher.  Over a season-high 84 plays, the Cardinals racked up 349 yards led by Hunter Walsh who was 28-for-46 for 248 yards and three touchdown tosses.  Dahmir Pross ran for 110 yards including a 43-yard pickup while Will Blake finished with a season-high 12 receptions good for 134 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively, Fisher yielded just 15 first downs and surrendered 300 total yards of offense in the win.

SERIES HISTORY: Saturday's game will mark the 20th time that Fisher and Utica have faced off in football with the Cardinals owning a significant advantage in the series.  Over 19 previous meeting, Fisher has won 16 times, however, the Pioneers have claimed each of the last two wins and three of the last four overall.

LAST TIME OUT: Fisher locked horns with one of the top teams in Division III this season as No. 15 Cortland scored 49 points in the first half and never looked back.  As a unit, Fisher struggled to get much going offensively as the team accounted for 169 yards on 55 plays.  Defensively, Joe Miscia paced Fisher again with 17 tackles.  The sophomore, who leads the country with 120 tackles to his credit, also recorded a sack, a pass breakup and his first-career interception against the Red Dragons.

WHAT'S AT STAKE: With just one game remaining in the regular season, there's a lot riding on Saturday's game at Utica as Fisher enters the contest at 4-5 overall.  Aside from getting to .500 on the year with a win, Fisher's fifth victory could potentially have playoff implications as the Cardinals would become eligible to be selected to play in one of a handful of ECAC Bowl games.  Should Fisher defeat Utica this weekend, the team would also finish the year at 3-3 in the Empire 8 standings, which would mark the first time it has been at least .500 in league play since going 6-2 in 2016.

SCOUTING UTICA: The Pioneers will go for their sixth win of the season on Saturday, however, head coach Blaise Faggiano's team has fallen in three of its last four games after starting the year 3-0.  If you were to look at Utica's statistics this season, you wouldn't notice too much of a difference from Fisher as the Pioneers are a pass-first type team.  Sonny Badyna leads the offense as the quarterback has completed 160-of-297 passes for just over 1,800 yards.  He has 12 touchdown tosses, but is prone to giving the ball away with 10 picks through nine games.  On the outside, Badyna has developed a strong rapport with Nate Palmer who leads the receiving corps with 37 grabs, 579 yards and four scores.  Matt Brantley has hauled in 24 catches for 332 yards and three touchdowns while Elijah Parker has 319 total yards on 24 catches and three TDs.

As a team, Utica has run the ball 315 times in all led by James Salles' 75 carries for 252 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Jamarious Morgan owns 232 rushing yards and is averaging 3.7 yards per attempt.

Defensively, Kwasi Addo leads the pack with 77 total tackles including six TFLs.  Devin Bryant has accounted for 59 stops on the year and a team-leading four picks while Jimmie Warren could be a problem for Fisher's offensive line with 9.5 tackles for a loss including four sacks.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Cardinals have a lot to look forward to heading into next season.  With another strong recruiting class on the horizon and numerous impact players set to return for another year, Fisher could vie for an Empire 8 Championship in 2022.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT: In case you missed it, Fisher Athletics launched its new mobile app last fall - SJFC Athletics - in the App Store and on Google Play.  The app, which gives fans, alumni, parents and more yet another opportunity to stay-up-to-date with the latest news, highlights, schedules and more, is free and features push notifications so you never miss a beat.  Speaking of apps, don't forget to download the Audacy mobile app to listen to each and every football game - just search ESPN ROCHESTER.
