GOLDEN DAYS: The traditional gift for 50 years of marriage is gold and this year marks the golden anniversary of the St. John Fisher College football program. Founded in 1971 as a club team, Fisher has won nearly 280 games and boasts a winning percentage of nearly .600 in that time. The College has enjoyed eight seasons with at least 10 wins, six Empire 8 conference title, five NCAA berths, three club national championships and hundreds of All-Conference honorees.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Cardinals managed just 266 total yards and threw five interceptions the last time these two teams faced off back in November of 2019. Then freshman
Hunter Walsh had an uncharacteristically bad outing after completing just eight passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Dahmir Pross gained 117 yards on the ground while Morrisville racked up 223 yards through the air and 275 yards on the ground in a 49-13 win at Drake Field.
SERIES HISTORY: In five historical meetings with the Mustangs, the Cardinals have won twice dating back to their first meeting in 2015. Overall, Morrisville has had Fisher's number as the Mustangs have outscored the Cardinals 179-131 and are averaging nearly 36 points per game in that span.
LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals fell to SUNY Brockport last weekend, 34-7, in Courage Bowl XVI inside Growney Stadium. Senior quarterback
Joseph Torrillo made his first-career start under center and finished with 173 yards on 13 completions to go along with a touchdown and three picks. The Buffalo native teamed up with
TySean Sizer in the second quarter for the longest play from scrimmage this season - a 64-yard touchdown strike. In all, Fisher netted just eight first downs and wasn't able to get much going out of the backfield. The Golden Eagles finished the game with 241 rushing yards and held the ball for over 40 minutes.
Morrisville is coming off a 58-7 loss at the hands of No. 19 Cortland in which it managed 83 yards of total offense including just 27 passing yards. The Reds Dragons forced the Mustangs into two turnovers and racked up over 500 yards of total offense on 53 plays.
KEEPING THE PONIES IN THE STABLE: The Cardinals defense has struggled this season against the run after having given up over 200 yards in each of their last two outings and will have its hands full again on Saturday against a Morrisville backfield that is averaging 115 yards per game midway through its season. On the other sideline, the Cardinals will look to up their ground game as Morrisville hasn't fared much better. Currently, its defense ranks last in the Empire 8 in opponent's rushing yards per game at just under 200 yards on average.
SCOUTING MORRISVILLE: The Mustangs enter their contest with Fisher sporting a 1-4 record as head coach Ed Raby, Jr.'s squad ranks near the bottom of the conference in nearly every statistical category. Through its first five games of the year, Morrisville is averaging a shade over 15 points per game and ranks last in scoring defense at 29.6 points on average. The Stangs are fifth in total offense (260.2) and are seventh in total defense after yielding over 413 yards to their opposition. Morrisville also ranks last in the league in rushing defense as it has given up nearly 200 yards per game through its first five contests.
Alek Britten has taken a majority of the snaps at quarterback for the Mustangs and has 668 yards on 131 attempts to go along with three touchdowns and six interceptions. The signal caller does have some big-time play makers on the outside led by Toure Hall who has 15 grabs for 174 yards while Quamel Jarvis has nine catches for 161 yards. Jarrell Chaney has caught nine passes for 132 yards and a team-leading two touchdowns. The Mustangs do possess a capable running attack led by Alex McBurnie whose 289 yards and two touchdowns lead the pack.
Defensively, Morrisville is paced by Joe Miller-LaBar's 48 tackles while Ernesto Mitchell has come away with 46 tackles over five games. As a team, the Mustangs have shown the ability to get into their opponent's backfield as they've recorded 33.0 tackles for a loss including four sacks.
LOOKING AHEAD: Following its meeting with Morrisville on Saturday, Fisher will return home on Saturday, October 16th to face off with Alfred University inside Growney Stadium. The Cardinals and Saxons played to a memorable finish in 2019 after Fisher scored 11 unanswered points capped off by a 28-yard, game-winning field goal by
Joe Dotterweich in a 31-28 come-from-behind win that evened Fisher's record at 5-5.
