TROY, N.Y. – With a 2-0 regular-season ending victory over Elmira College at Campus Field on Saturday afternoon, the St. John Fisher College men's soccer team is officially headed to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The Cardinals soared to 5-7-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the Empire 8 with the win, while they ended Elmira's season at 9-9-0 and 3-5-0 within the conference.
The teams traded corner kicks for the first 20 minutes of play, but Fisher began to pull away from there as they earned two more corner kicks in the following five minutes of play. Just three minutes later, the Cardinals made the separation clear as
Riley Rease sent a pass through the midfield to
Jackson Bishop, who connected with his fourth goal of the season in the match's 28th minute.
From that point on, the Fisher defense of
Cam Webb,
Tim Brown,
Ryan Brown, and
Trevor Heschke held the Soaring Eagles to just two attempts at net for the remainder of the first half of play.
Coming out of the intermission, Elmira had two chances to equalize following a corner kick, but Fisher goalkeeper
Jadon Schlierf stood tall and turned both attempts away. Instead, the Cardinals' offense generated a chance of its own as Rease uncorked a shot which the hosts' keeper stopped but couldn't handle, as it was followed up by
Ben Woolingham, who buried the ricochet for his second goal of the year and held up as the final goal of the contest.
Fisher's eight shots in the tilt were led by Bishop who owned three attempts himself, while the remaining five were split by Rease, Woolingham,
Joe Barraco,
Justin Bonetto, and
Jeff Meyers.
Schlierf logged all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Cardinals, stopping all seven shots that sailed in his direction. His record in goal improved, with the team's, to 5-7-3 as he earned his fourth shut out of the year.
The Cardinals have now earned the Empire 8 Conference Tournament's four-seed, as they will host No. 5 Alfred, who they defeated 1-0 just a week ago, in the championship's first round on Monday, November 1st at 7 P.M. at Growney Stadium.
