Field Hockey Finishes E8 Schedule at 8-0 Following Win at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team completed a perfect regular season against Empire 8 teams as the Cardinals defeated Houghton College on Wednesday night, 2-0, at Burke Field.  With the win, Fisher which had already clinched the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and earned home field advantage throughout the upcoming conference tournament, improved to 10-6 on the year and 8-0 in the league standings while the Highlanders dipped to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the Empire 8.

Both defenses were on display early as neither allowed a goal through the first three quarters of play despite Fisher's offense having had 16 shots including five on goal over the first 45 minutes.

With the game still scoreless in the fourth, the Cardinals' persistence finally paid off in the 48th minute when Gianna Palma threaded a long pass to Molly Fisher who blasted her eighth goal of the season past the Highlanders' keeper to make it 1-0 in the visitors' favor.

Leading by a goal with time winding down, Fisher padded its advantage in the 53rd minute as Audrey Grieb inserted the ball on a corner to Bre Socker who unloaded a shot from the top of the arc and in to make it a two-goal affair.

In all, Fisher finished with 20 total shots led by Socker who fired nine in the win including five on goal.  Fisher finished with five shots while Emma Cooper, Sam Choate, Riley Jameson and Palma were each credited with one shot apiece.

In goal, Sophia Trozzi improved to 10-6 on the season after posting her second consecutive shutout and seventh clean sheet of the year.  The Warmister, Pa. native made one save over 60 minutes.

Fisher will close out its regular season at 3 p.m. on Saturday when it travels to Canton to take on St. Lawrence in a non-conference bout.
