CANTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team fell in its regular season finale on Saturday after dropping a non-conference contest at St. Lawrence, 3-2. With the loss, Fisher will enter the postseason with a 10-7 overall mark while the Saints improved to 11-6 following the victory.
In all, Fisher accounted for 18 shots on the day led by
Bre Socker who finished with nine including six on goal.
Audrey Grieb and
Gianna Palma each had three shots in the loss while
Emma Cooper had two in all.
The Cardinals were first to get on the board in just the third minute as Cooper found Socker for the senior's 15th goal of the year to make it 1-0 in the visitors' favor.
The advantage held until late in the third quarter when the Saints netted the equalizer on a penalty corner and scored the go-ahead goal two minutes later in similar fashion.
Clinging to a 2-1 edge, St. Lawrence padded its lead with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter after beating the Cardinals' defense on another penalty corner to hold a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
As the fourth quarter got underway, Fisher cut the deficit to one goal in the 48th minute when
Emma Cooper rebounded her own shot and buried it into the corner of the cage to pull Fisher to within one, 3-2.
Down by a single goal with plenty of time to work with, Fisher looked to up the pace as the team was awarded two penalty corners over the final 10 minutes, but the Saints' defense stood its ground to preserve the one-goal win.
Sophia Trozzi was tagged with the loss to wrap up the regular season at 10-7 overall. The sophomore keeper made 10 saves over 60 minutes.
Fisher, which won the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship, will look to defend its conference crown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it takes on fourth-seeded Nazareth in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Championship at Growney Stadium.
