Field Hockey Nearly Stuns No. 19 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team had its five-game winning streak halted on Wednesday evening as the Cardinals pushed nationally-ranked Cortland to the brink before an overtime goal propelled the No. 19 Red Dragons a 3-2 win at Stadium White.  With the loss, the Cardinals moved to 8-6 on the year while Cortland improved to 13-1 overall.

Fisher got off to a quick start and pushed ahead 1-0 after Alyssa Andres corralled a loose ball and smacked it past the Red Dragons' keeper in just the fourth minute.

Trailing by a goal, Cortland responded in the 23rd minute after blasting one into the left side of the cage to level the game at one goal aside.

As the second half got underway, the Red Dragons scored just 39 seconds after the opening whistle after gathering a ball in front of Fisher's goal and depositing it into the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage.

From there, the Red Dragons were unable to hold Fisher's high-powered offense at bay as Molly Fisher found Audrey Grieb wide open on the far side for her second goal of the season that made it 2-2.

Following a scoreless fourth quarter, both teams readied for overtime.  After swapping ends of the field, Cortland gained possession and sent a shot in front that found its mark in the 62nd minute to secure the 3-2 non-conference win.

Sophia Trozzi, who was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, was tagged with the loss to move to 8-6 on the season.  The Warmister, Pa. native made seven saves in the loss overall.

The Cardinals will return to Empire 8 play at 12 p.m. on Saturday when they host Washington and Jefferson inside Growney Stadium on Senior Day.  The team can secure the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship with a win.
