SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Alea Stegierwald, who now owns 1,349 kills in her career, moved into sole possession of second place on Fisher's all-time kills list as St. John Fisher College women's volleyball started a new winning streak on Saturday as the Cardinals swept Plattsburgh State and Union College in a pair of non-conference matches inside the Viniar Athletic Center. With the wins, Fisher improved to 18-4 overall.
FISHER 3, PLATTSBURGH 0
It was all Fisher from the get-go as the Cardinals overwhelmed Plattsburgh in the opening set, 25-11, before taking the second and third sets, 25-17. Overall, the Cardinals hit .240 in the win and accounted for 37 kills and 10 aces.
Steigerwald, who passed Anna Marcy's mark of 1,321 career kills, contributed 10 kills and a team-leading 16 digs coupled with three aces in the win.
Lindsey DeBonis finished with eight kills and five digs while
Sydney French and
Olivia Nellis each accounted for five kills. Brooke Seagers had four aces and 13 digs off the bench while
Julia Halsey was credited with 10 digs over three sets.
Katie Leaty chipped in with 16 assists while
Kelly Taylor had 12 over two frames.
FISHER 3, UNION 0
After taking the first two sets, 25-21, Fisher found itself trailing Union, 6-4, but scored six straight points of their own, including three kills by Steigerwald, to take a 9-7 lead. Union battled back to even the score, but Fisher found a groove off a French kill, scoring another six-straight points and taking the set, 25-20. The Cardinals improved their hitting on the night to .282 and tallied 46 kills in the match.
Steigerwald led the Cardinals again with 12 kills, six digs, and a service ace, while DeBonis combined for 11 kills and a game-high 15 digs. French tallied seven kills and four digs while Nellis and
Delayne Young each sent home five kills. Setter Leaty earned 37 assists in the win, but also accounted for three points on two kills and a service ace.
The Cardinals are back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Nazareth College for an Empire 8 showdown in Kidera Gymnasium.
