HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team surrendered a 0-2 loss to New York University in the first round of the Engineering Cup at DeBaun Athletic Complex on Saturday. The Cardinals' dropped to 1-2 on the season as the Violets moved to 3-0.
Junior goalkeeper
Kayla Shutts received the nod for her first career start for the Cardinals after she logged 115 minutes in goal and five saves last season.
The teams played a mostly even first half as neither team was able to break open the scoring. Three Cardinals tallied shots in the half, two of which were on goal.
The Fisher defense of
Mia Tirabassi,
Molly Tice, and
Abigail Dwyer locked up NYU's offensive efforts, as the back line was credited with two blocked shots in the first 45 minutes.
NYU found a tempo at the offensive end following the intermission. A cross through the middle of the pitch set up its first goal at the 77-minute mark. Ten minutes later, the Violets scored their second and final goal of the afternoon.
The Cardinals were unable to create an offensive tempo against the Violets. Fisher totaled five shots during the matchup, with three that threatened the NYU keeper.
Shutts made one save in the contest, whose season record now sits at 0-1.
Fisher plans to avenge itself when the Cardinals take on former Empire 8 foe, the Stevens Ducks, in a 12 P.M. matchup tomorrow, September 8 at DeBaun Athletic Complex.
