Kovarik Scores Game-Winner as Women's Soccer Wins First Empire 8 Match

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team secured its first Empire 8 Conference victory of the season on Saturday night when the Cardinals defeated Alfred University in the nightcap at Growney Stadium, 2-1. Fisher improved to 3-6-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the conference while the Saxons dropped to 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Empire 8.

Alfred was awarded a free kick just six minutes into the contest which the Saxons used to put themselves on the board.

The opponent's score fueled the Fisher fire as the offense ramped up its energy and produced four shots on goal in the next thirty minutes of play.

A free kick set the Cardinals up for a scoring opportunity of their own at the 37-minute mark as Abigail Barr's shot above the keeper's head was saved, but junior Shiane Irwin tipped in the rebound to tie the game at one score apiece.

More chances for the Cardinals to etch their name in the scoring column came in the second half as they were awarded three corner kicks in the first ten minutes coming off the toe of Emily Murray.

Solid defensive play from Mia Tirabassi turned into a long ball for Cardinals' forward, Carli Kovarik as she used her speed to beat three Saxons defenders and their keeper to put Fisher up, 2-1.

A tie-up awarded Alfred a penalty kick for Cardinals' keeper Kayla Shutts' most challenging test of the night. As the Saxon approached the ball, Shutts mirrored her steps and made a perfect diving save to protect the Fisher lead.

The Cardinals' defense locked up as the line of Tirabassi, Molly Tice and Kierra Duvall only allowed a single Saxon shot for the remainder of the game.

Fisher outshot Alfred 10-6 as Kovarik led the way with three attempts. Abigail Barr and Abigail Dwyer added two shots each while Irwin, Logan Chase, and Megan Letta added one apiece.

Shutts logged all 90 minutes in goal and tallied four saves. Her save percentage increased to .781 as her season record now rests at 1-2-1.

The Cardinals get a week of rest before they hit the road for their next Empire 8 contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at Elmira College.
