ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team dropped its Tuesday evening bout to former Empire 8 rival, Ithaca College, at Carp Wood Field, 0-4. With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 2-6-1 while the Bombers improved to 5-2-1.
The Cardinals had an opportunity to score six minutes into the contest when Fisher was awarded a corner kick and
Jessica Aldred found the toe of
Natalie Smith, but had her shot blocked by an Ithaca defender.
Six minutes later, the Bombers struck first as cross and shot landed just past the fingertips of Cardinals' keeper, junior
Kayla Shutts.
Down a score, the Fisher defense locked up as the line of
Kierra Duvall,
Molly Tice, and
Mia Tirabassi did not allow its opponent to score for the remainder of the first half.
The Cardinals offense came out of the locker room strong, as the two teams traded shots for the first 15 minutes of the second half.
The Bombers put up three more scores in the next five minutes, a deficit which became insurmountable for the Cardinal and Gold.
Fisher was led by
Carli Kovarik on the offensive front as the sophomore posted four shots in the matchup. She was followed by juniors
Shiane Irwin and
Abigail Dwyer who added two shots each. Smith,
Becky Mack, and
Megan Letta added a shot apiece.
Shutts tallied all 90 minutes in goal and made 11 saves against the potent Bombers' offense. Her save percentage rests at .778 and her 2019 record moved to 0-2-1.
Fisher is back at home at 7 p.m. this Saturday, September 24 when it hosts the Alfred University Saxons under the Growney Stadium lights for its first of three straight conference matches.
