PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior
Lindsay Scott scored two goals and added two assists for a career-high six points to lead the St. John Fisher College field hockey team to a 5-2 win against SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals stay undefeated at 4-0 on the year while the Hawks drop to .500 at 3-3 this season.
It was a defensive battle in the first period. Junior
Bre Socker got a few shots on net but was stymied by the New Paltz net minder. Senior
Kelly Bergamo came through with a stop to keep the game scoreless at the end of the opening frame.
Less than two minutes into the second period, graduate student
Meagan McDonald found Scott streaking up the middle and the Webster native buried it to make it 1-0, Cardinals. Bergamo made a blocker save with a few minutes left in the half as Fisher carried a one-goal edge into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, the Cardinals looked to add to their lead and were able to make it 2-0 with Scott setting up senior
Danila Casseri for the goal. Scott would then be awarded a penalty stroke with less than a minute to go in the third period. Scott beat the Hawks' goaltender to put Fisher in front 3-0.
Carrying a three goal advantage into the final frame, the Cardinals padded their lead with Socker ricocheting one off the goalie and the post and in just a few minutes into the period. The Liverpool native hit the back of net again a few minutes later with Scott sending it in front for Socker to poke it in and make it 5-0 Fisher.
The Hawks would not go away quietly as they scored a pair of goals in the later stages of the fourth. New Paltz looked to keep the comeback going but Begamo stood tall in the crease and even got some help from her defense with freshman
Madison Breward making a defensive save. The Cardinals were able to hold off the Hawks the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Socker had a game-high nine shots with four of them on goal. Casseri's goal in the third was her first since 2017. Bergamo made a career-high seven saves over 60 minutes played in net.
The Cardinals have over a week off before they travel to Williamston, Mass. to face Nationally-Ranked Williams College at 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 22nd.
