Football Ready to Wrestle the Bears on Saturday in its Home Opener

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College football team will look to build upon its season-opening win last weekend at 12 p.m. this Saturday when it welcomes Bridgewater State to Growney Stadium in what will mark the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between the two programs.  Fisher is coming off a convincing win over Buffalo State as the Cardinals held the Bengals to just 236 total yards in a 23-6 decision.  The Bears, meanwhile, fell to Morrisville in their home opener, 39-7.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT: In case you missed it, Fisher Athletics launched its new mobile app last fall - SJFC Athletics - in the App Store and on Google Play.  The app, which gives fans, alumni, parents and more yet another opportunity to stay-up-to-date with the latest news, highlights, schedules and more, is free and features push notifications so you never miss a beat.  Speaking of apps, don't forget to download the Radio.com mobile app to listen to each and every football game - just search ESPN ROCHESTER.

SERIES HISTORY: In over 100 combined years of playing collegiate football, the Cardinals and Bears have never faced off against each other.  Saturday's matchup will be their first, however, it won't be their last as the two teams will play each other next season in Massachusetts on Bridgewater's home field.

LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals looked sharp in their season opener last Saturday after holding the Buffalo State Bengals to just 53 rushing yards in a 23-6 non-conference win on the road.  It didn't take long for the Cardinals to gain an advantage as the head coach Paul Vosburgh's team came up with an interception before marching 55 yards over seven plays to take a 7-0 edge.  Fisher continued to dominate on both sides of the ball and eventually built a 20-0 lead before a 45-yard passing play got the Bengals on the board.  In all, Fisher had 336 yards of total offense and possessed the ball for over 35 minutes without turning the ball over.

TURNING THE WHEELS: Junior linebacker Justin Wheeler made it a long day for the Bengals' offensive line on Saturday as the Binghamton native was in the backfield all game.  Wheeler, who was named the Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, finished a game-high 13 tackles including nine solo stops.  He led the Cardinals' defense with a career-high 3.0 sacks and racked up 5.0 tackles for a loss in all.

KEEPING IT 100: A staple of the Cardinals over the last two decades has been the ability to run the ball...a lot...Since 2001, Fisher has had 10 backs surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season with six different backs having done so.  While he still has a long way to go to join that list, Dahmir Pross looked the part against Buffalo State as the Rochester native carried the ball 23 times for 115 yards making him the first back to rush for 100 yards in a game since James Chambers in 2017.  Pross averaged 5.0 yards per carry and found pay dirt twice in the season-opener.

THRILL BLAKE: Senior wideout Will Blake brought the Fisher faithful to its feet on Saturday after hauling in a 46-yard reception that put the Cardinals' offense deep inside Buffalo State Territory.  Blake, who also nabbed a 31-yard reception, had five catches in all for a game-high 110 yards.  The Penfield native looked sharp in last season's opener as well after producing 112 yards through the air en route to nearly 500 yards on the year.

"THREE"FENCE: Three seemed to be a common denominator last weekend as Fisher's defense looked dominant throughout its win at Buffalo State as the Cardinals held the Bengals to just 236 total yards of offense.  Outside of one long passing play, the Bengals weren't able to get much going against the Cardinals' secondary as Fisher totaled three interceptions on the day with Anthony Manna, Vince DiMonte and Jason Rodriguez jumping routes.  Up front, the Cardinals basically eliminated the ground game thanks in large part to Justin Wheeler's career-high three sacks.  In fact, Fisher was in the backfield all game and finished with eight tackles for a loss for 33 yards. Buffalo State wasn't able to extend any drives either with Fisher holding the Bengals to just three third down conversions overall.

SPEAKING OF THREE: Junior place-kicker Joe Dotterweich came up huge on Saturday as the North Tonawanda native converted 3-of-4 field goals and connected on both extra point opportunities.  Dotterweich nailed a 28-yarder and a 31-yard attempt before converting a career-high 41-yard field goal.  In all, Dotterweich had 11 points on the day, which was the most a Fisher kicker has accounted for since 2011 when Chad Monheim did it at Johns Hopkins.  To put Dotterweich's day into perspective, Fisher kicked just two field goals all of last season - in nine games.

SCOUTING BRIDGEWATER STATE: The Bears had a rough opening week after finishing last season with an 8-3 overall record and a New England Bowl win over Salve Regina as Bridgewater was upended by fellow Empire 8 member Morrisville State, 39-7, on its home field.  The Bears managed just 268 total yards of offense and were unable to stop the Mustangs' running game as Morrisville put up 171 yards on the ground.  Bridgewater's lone score of the game came in the third quarter after the Bears took over deep inside Morrisville's territory courtesy of a fumble at the 16-yard line.

Despite its struggles last week, the Bears still possess an experienced team.  On the offensive side of the ball, senior quarterback Stefano D'Emilia completed 60-percent of his passes in the team's opener for 124 yards and two picks.  D'Emilia will look to target two big receivers in William Watts and T.J. Hairston as the duo combined to catch all 12 of his completions last week.  Watts leads the team with seven catches and 78 yards while Hairston has made five grabs for 60 yards in all.  On the ground, the Bears will turn to senior Nick Sanatavicca who carried the ball 15 times last Saturday for 31 yards.

Defensively, head coach Joe Verria runs a 4-3 scheme led by defensive end Dimitri Dorinvil who came away with eight tackles and one sack against Morrisville.  Linebacker Steven Silvia also recorded eight tackles and a sack in the loss while John MacDermott forced a fumble and came up with six tackles on the day.

HALL OF FAME NEWS: St. John Fisher College is set to induct eight new members into its Athletics Hall of Fame later this fall including three former football players.  All-American Tim Bailey '11 will be inducted after a record-setting career under center.  To date, he still ranks first in program history in completions (628), yards (8,352 – 1,500 more than second) and touchdowns with 77 while his 1010 attempts is second in team history.  His 62.2 completion percentage is third all-time.  On the single season list, Bailey's name appears three times in single-season attempts, yards and completions while he ranks first all-time in touchdowns for a season with 35.  James Reile '08 will also be enshrined as the former running back is fourth all-time in rushing yards with over 3,100 while his 39 touchdowns are second in Fisher's storied history.  Former All-American defensive end Terry Principe '80 will be inducted as well.  Following his time in uniform, Principe played a significant role in helping to fundraise in order to sustain the program, which was a club at that time.  Kyle Denhoff '12 (men's lacrosse), Colleen Maloney '11 (women's basketball), Sandy Spero '80 (wrestling), Luke Lennox '10 (men's soccer) and Irene Valentine '97 (softball) will also be honored.
