SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team saw its first scoring output of the season on Sunday afternoon, but could not contain host Susquehanna University as the Cardinals fell to the River Hawks at the Sassafras Multi-Purpose Field, 5-1. With the loss, Fisher dropped to 0-2 on the season, while Susquehanna moved to 1-1 as it recorded its first win of the season.
The Cardinals came out of the gates hot and caught fire on its first offensive drive. Just six and a half minutes into the match, freshman midfielder
Ishaan Kashyap made a touch on a ball perfectly placed by his classmate, forward
Ben Woolingham, which struck the back of the net.
The new duo notched the Cardinals' first goal of the season, after the pair shared command of the pitch at Williamsville East and were named to the All-Western New York First-Team last year.
Soon after, Susquehanna was awarded a corner kick and the River Hawks netted the game-tying goal. From there, the hosts were able to build some breathing room as they scored two more goals before intermission before adding two more in the second half.
Susquehanna's offensive pressure kept transfer keeper
Aaron Smith busy throughout the 81 minutes he logged on the night. Of the 16 shots he faced, Smith got a glove on 10 of them throughout the course of the matchup. Smith's record in a Cardinals' uniform now rests at 0-2.
Woolingham and sophomore defender
Brian Teel both tallied one shot for Fisher in the contest.
The Cardinals look to bounce back at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 7 when they travel to Saratoga Springs for the Skidmore Alumni Soccer Classic where they will face the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College in the first round.
