SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team fell to Skidmore College in the first round of the Skidmore Alumni Soccer Classic at Wachenheim Field, 0-3. The Cardinals' record fell to 0-3 while the Thoroughbreds improved to 3-0.
The Thoroughbreds put themselves in the scoring column just 6:45 into the match as a crossed ball was tapped into the net, right outside of the reach of the Cardinals' keeper,
Aaron Smith.
As the clock struck the 8-minute mark, the Fisher coaching staff substituted in sophomore keeper
Peyton Mattis to defend between the posts. The move marked what would be the beginning of the keeper's first significant minutes in a Fisher uniform. The change electrified the Cardinals' back line of
Aaron Wilkins,
Justin Miles,
Brian Teel, and
Tim Brown, as it denied any further opposing offensive production in the first 45 minutes.
After the intermission, the Cardinals were unable to shift momentum as Skidmore netted their second and third goals of the afternoon.
Mattis' save percentage increases to .778 on the season as he deflected all but two of the shots that neared his gloves. His record now rests at 0-1.
Fisher notched five shots on the afternoon, led by forward
Brennan Brown, who had two himself.
The Cardinals look to redeem themselves at 11 A.M. tomorrow, September 8 when they face the Oswego State Lakers at Wachenheim Field.
