PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Bre Socker scored twice and took a game-high 15 shots as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team overwhelmed visiting William Smith College, 3-1, on Friday night in the Cardinals' season-opener at Growney Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 1-0 while the Herons dipped to 0-1.
It didn't take long for Fisher to put William Smith on the defensive as Socker forced a turnover near midfield and worked through the visitors' defense before depositing a shot into the back of the cage to make it a one-goal affair in just the fourth minute.
Less than 10 minutes later, Socker was at it again as
Lindsay Scott sent a pass to the middle of the field that found the junior forward's stick as she worked around the keeper before uncorking a shot for her second goal of the game.
Already ahead by two goals following intermission, the Cardinals made it a three-goal contest just 42 seconds into the second half as
Reghan Amoroso bounced one past the Herons' defense and into the cage for her first tally of the 2019 campaign.
Facing an uphill climb, William Smith continued to work its offense and would get on the board in the 42nd minute, but that was as close as it would come as the Cardinals' defense turned up the intensity and held the visitors at bay over the final 18 minutes of action.
In all, Fisher was credited with 30 shots including 18 on goal.
Alyssa Andres had five shots in the win while
Gianna Palma and Scott had three apiece.
Jess Snyder and Amoroso had two shots overall.
In goal, senior
Kelly Bergamo made her first career start in goal and did not disappoint as the Liverpool native picked up her first win (1-0) after making three saves in 60 minutes of play.
The Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 7th when they host St. Lawrence University in a non-conference bout on the turf inside Growney Stadium.
