PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 12 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team secured its spot in Sunday's Empire 8 Conference Championship Game with a 11-1 victory over Nazareth College in the first of two semifinals on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Fisher has now extended its winning streak to 16 games, while also tying the all-time program record for total wins in a season with 17. The Golden Flyers wrapped up their 2019 season with a 10-8 overall record following the defeat.
For the second consecutive game and third time this season, Fisher held its opponent to only one goal, while also shutting out the Golden Flyers in the opening 30 minutes of action. As a team, Fisher caused 14 of the 27 Nazareth turnovers, while winning 11 of the game's 14 draw controls.
The Cardinals got the goal scoring started early on in the opening half as
Sydney DeGirolamo notched her 30
th of the season and the first goal of the game at the 27:44 mark.
From there, Fisher continued to hold Nazareth off of the scoreboard, while the Cardinals added three more goals to their lead before the halftime break.
Alyssa Sabotka put the Cardinals ahead by two goals at the 14:59 mark, which was then followed by back-to-back goals from
Mary Grace Doyle to close out the first half with a four-goal scoring run.
Mallory Eymer opened the second half scoring as it only took the junior only 35 seconds to increase the Cardinal lead to 5-0.
Following the Eymer tally,
Emily Thompson continued her impressive freshman season with her 29
th of the season as the Cardinals increased their lead to six goals with just over 24 minutes remaining in the second half.
At the 22:03 mark of the second half, Nazareth found the back of the net for its first goal of the semifinal as the Golden Flyers were able to stop the six-goal Fisher scoring run.
As the second half wore on, the Fisher defense once again came up in the clutch, shutting out the Golden Flyers for the remaining 22 minutes of action to help secure the victory. Aside from the stellar defensive play, the Cardinals added five more goals to their lead before the final horn sounded as goal scorers included DeGirolamo, Eymer, Thompson, and
Brittany Halpin.
Eymer led all scorers with five points in the semifinal matchup as the Syracuse native finished with three goals and two assists, increasing her season totals to 50 goals and 17 assists.
Defensively, Fisher was led by
Hayley Maguire and
Molly Tice who posted six and four caused turnovers respectively throughout the game.
Morgan Hayes was credited with her sixth win of the season in net for Fisher after seeing the first half of action, while
Claudia Mocciaro was between the pipes for the second half and finished with six total saves.
Fisher will be back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. as it hosts Stevens in the Empire 8 Conference Championship game at Growney Stadium as the Cardinals look to win their eighth consecutive conference title.
