HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Houghton College by a score of 24-5 on the road in Empire 8 Conference action. With the victory Fisher improves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8, while the Highlanders fall to 4-8 overall on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
Fisher dominated from the start as the Cardinals totaled 40 shots on goal in the game, while causing 29 Houghton turnovers throughout.
Nicholas Miller finished with a game-high four goals and two assists, which puts the sophomore one goal away from tying the program's all-time mark for goals in a single season.
The Cardinals got the goal scoring started early and often in the conference matchup as
Chance Gates tallied the first goal of the game from
Ian Evans at the 12:58 mark.
From there, Fisher would find the back of the cage six more times before the first period concluded, including three goals from Miller and two from senior
Zach Wagner.
Houghton was the first team on the scoreboard as the Highlanders opened up the second 15-minute period with back-to-back goals before the 10-minute mark.
However, as the second period of play continued, Fisher tacked on five more goals before the halftime break as the Cardinals headed into the locker room with a 12-2 advantage. Finding the back of the net in the second period was Evans,
Jack Mulvihill,
Jack Hyde,
Tommy Farry, and
Danny Turck.
Holding a 10-goal lead, Fisher who extend its lead up to 13 as the Cardinals pushed forward with early goals from Gates, Mulvihill, and Wagner.
Following the Highlander's third goal of the game, Fisher would be able to beat the Houghton goalkeeper four more times in the final three and a half minutes before the final quarter. Increasing the Fisher lead to 19-3 were Evans,
Gabe VanOrder,
Domenic Delvecchio, and
Alex Hunt.
As the fourth quarter got underway, both sides would trade goals back-and-forth as Hunt notched his second of the game.
Over the final 10 minutes of regulation,
Brennan O'Brien,
Daniel Harris,
Shane Rickard, and
Jack Hyde would all join the score sheet as the Cardinals increased its current winning streak to five games.
As a team the Cardinals assisted on 16 of its 24 goals, with Evans leading the way with a game-high three.
Joe Post finished 17-19 inside the face off circle, while
Matt Jeffries finished 9-10 and grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls.
Darin Eakins was credited with his eighth victory of the season in net for Fisher, while
Brandon Moore finished with a team-high two saves between the pipes.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Utica College to take on the Pioneers in conference action.
