UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team won its fifth straight game on Wednesday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Utica College on the road by a score of 21-6. With the victory Fisher improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Pioneers fall to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in Empire 8 play.
At the 8:23 mark of the second period,
Nicholas Miller scored his 50
th goal of the season to break the program's single-season goal record, surpassing Matt Hargather's mark of 49 goals back in 2007. The sophomore attackman also finished the game with four goals and four assists, while also grabbing one ground ball.
Chance Gates led the way offensively, as the senior scored a career-high five goals, while fellow senior
Zach Wagner added four goals of his own in the conference matchup.
Aside from his record-breaking goal, Miller got the game's goal scoring started just one and a half minutes after the opening whistle. Utica would quickly answer as the Pioneers tied the game back-up just before the nine-minute mark of the opening quarter.
From there, Fisher would score the game's next three goals as Wagner tallied his first two goals, followed by Gates's first of the game.
The Pioneers cut the lead to two at the 2:27 mark, however the Cardinals found the back of the net three more times over the final two minutes before halftime. The late first period goal scorers included Gates, Wagner, and
Ian Evans.
As the second period got underway, the Fisher offense continued its goal scoring streak as the Cardinals jumped ahead 12-2, with five consecutive goals to open up the second 15 minutes. Second period goal scores included Miller, Wagner, Evans,
Brennan O'Brien, and
Jack Hyde.
With only 51 seconds remaining before the halftime break, Utica would cut the Cardinal lead to 12-3 at the midway point of the conference matchup.
After closing out the first half with a goal, the Pioneers opened up the second half with an early goal at the 8:59 mark of the third period.
Once again the Cardinals rallied back with another scoring run as Gates picked up his third of the game to start a six-goal run to close out the third period. Putting Fisher ahead 18-4 heading into the final period were goals from Miller, Hyde, and Gates.
The Cardinal goal scoring run would continue into the fourth period as O'Brien,
Alex Hunt, and
Tucker O'Donnell increased the lead to 21-4.
Utica would close out the game's goal scoring as the Pioneers scored back-to-back goals, however Fisher would increase its winning streak to five straight games in the end.
Darin Eakins was credited with his ninth win in net for the Cardinals as the junior finished with eight saves between the pipes.
Joe Post finished 21-25 inside the face off circle, while also grabbing a game-high 15 ground balls.
Fisher returns to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they welcome Hartwick to Growney Stadium for another conference matchup and the team's Senior Day celebration.
