PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team remained perfect on its home turf on Wednesday afternoon as the Cardinals held on to defeat SUNY Geneseo by a score of 11-8. With the non-conference victory Fisher improves to 9-1 overall on the season, while the Knights fall to 3-8 overall in 2019.
Goalkeeper
Darin Eakins captured his seventh win of the season in net for Fisher as the junior finished the game with eight total saves.
Both teams would trade goals back-and-forth in the opening quarter, as the scoreboard read 2-2 at the end of the first 15 minutes of play. Geneseo was the first team to find the back of the net in the first period as the Knights took the early lead only one minute after the opening whistle.
Tommy Farry answered two minutes later with his fifth of the season off of feed from fellow freshman
Jordan Depetres.
Following the Knights' second tally of the period,
Jack Mulvihill answered with his first of three goals in the game as
Nicholas Miller picked up his first of two assists.
As the second quarter got underway, it was Geneseo that would break the tie as the Knights took a one-goal advantage at the 10:23 mark.
From there only two more goals were scored in the second quarter, both of them by Fisher as
Ian Evans and Mulvihill gave the Cardinals some momentum heading into the halftime break up 4-3.
In the second half, Geneseo tied the non-conference matchup at four goals apiece as the Knights opened the second half scoring at the 12:27 mark of the third period.
From there, Fisher would find the back of the net five times in the third period, three of them coming on the man-up advantage, while the Cardinal defense held the Knights to only two.
Evans and Miller were able find the back of the net twice in the third period, while Mulvihill capped off his hat-trick at the 6:57 mark.
Much like the first period of play, both sides would trade a pair of goals as the Cardinal defense held strong and kept the Knights out of the offensive zone for the majority of the final quarter. Wagner and Miller sealed the Fisher victory with the fourth quarter tallies, while
Tucker O'Donnell picked up his third assist of the afternoon.
Joe Post was inside the face off circle for all 22 draws as the sophomore won 15 of them and grabbed a game-high eight ground balls.
Kyle O'Dea led the way defensively causing two turnovers, while
Matt Jeffries and
Roger Panara each grabbed three ground balls.
Fisher returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday when it travels to Houghton College for an Empire 8 Conference matchup with the Highlanders.
