ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2019 regular season schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 26-4 victory over The Sage Colleges. With the win, Fisher improves to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the Empire 8 standings, while the Gators fall to 8-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
With its 14
th regular season victory,
Dave Dobbins's team records the highest win total through the start of postseason play since the 2010 season where the Cardinals won 16 regular season matchups.
As a team versus Sage, five Cardinals notched hat-tricks throughout the game, while 14 in all were able to find the back of the net.
The Cardinals opened up the game's goal scoring early and often on Saturday afternoon as Fisher totaled nine goals in the opening period, while holding Sage to only one shot.
Danny Turck opened the scoring for Fisher at the 13:33 mark, which was quickly followed by tallies from
Joe Post,
Nicholas Miller, and
Jack Mulvihill before the clock reached the 10 minute mark. From there the Cardinals would add six more goals to its total as the remaining first period goal scorers included
Jordan Depetres,
Ian Evans, and Miller.
Fisher would then open the scoring in the second 15-minute period at the 9:23 mark as Evans capped off his hat-trick and 43
rd goal of the season. As the second period continued, the Cardinals would add five more goals to its lead before halftime as Miller
Chance Gates, and
Jake Riley all helped push the Cardinals ahead 16-0 at the midway point.
As the third period of action began, it was Sage this time to open up the scoring as the Gators tallied their first goal of the matchup at the 12:54 mark.
However, the Cardinals would register another five goals before the final quarter began as the third period goal scorers included Gates,
Jack Hyde,
Alex Hunt, and
Mitch Rein.
The Cardinals would continue to roll in the fourth period as
Brennan O'Brien notched his 11
th of the season to open the scoring in the game's final 15 minutes. Following Sage's second goal of the game, Fisher picked up its final four goals of the game from O'Brien and Riley, as well as
Derek Olney's first career collegiate goal at the 2:56 mark.
Sage would add two more goals to its daily total, however Fisher caps off its regular season with a 5-2 record on the road, to go along with a 7-1 conference mark.
Brandon Moore got the start in net for the Cardinals and finished the first three periods of action with two saves, while
Nicholas Hallinan saw the fourth period action and finished with three saves.
Post finished 15-21 inside the faceoff circle on the day and also grabbed a game-high 13 ground balls.
John Austin led the way defensively as the sophomore posted a game-high three caused turnovers, while fellow sophomore
Matt Jeffries finished 4-7 on his draws, with five ground balls.
Fisher will be back in action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. when it hosts Hartwick in the opening round of the Empire 8 Conference Championship.
