PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Just one day after becoming the program's all-time leader in RBI,
Sarah Kubik of the St. John Fisher College softball team drove in four more runs on Thursday to break the Empire 8 record for RBI as the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to seven games with a pair of walk-off wins over visiting Elmira College. With the wins, Fisher moved to 22-13 on the season and remained atop the Empire 8 standings at 11-1. Elmira wrapped up the day at 9-13 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
Kubik, who has now driven in 137 runs in her career, passed the conference's mark of 136 that was set by Courtney Fitzgerald of Utica in 2015. The Orchard Park native is also nearing another milestone as she needs just two home runs to become the Cardinals' all-time leader.
FISHER 8, ELMIRA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
After setting the side down in order in the top of the first, Fisher came through with three runs on four hits in the home half of the inning.
Julia Sortisio turned on a pitch to lead off the frame with a single through the left side. The senior would steal second base and scored three batters later when Kubik added to her program record for RBI with a run-scoring single before
Sammie Torlish returned the favor with a double to left. With two runs already on the board and two outs,
Abby Flakus kept the inning alive with a double down the right field line that plated Torlish to make it a three-run affair.
Both teams settled into a groove as neither team would generate much offense until the bottom of the fifth when the Cardinals exploded for five runs on five hits to put a bow on their 21st win of the season.
Emily Trotman began the inning with a single and moved to second following an error on the return throw. The Soaring Eagles looked poised to escape the inning unharmed until Torlish cracked another double to right center that scored Trotman and made it 4-0. From there, Flakus singled through the left side to drive in a run before
Jessica Sardina crushed an RBI-triple off the right field fence to make it 6-0. With a runner and third and two down,
Mary Claire Grosvenor stepped in and put the game on ice after mashing a two-run walk-off home run to put it at 8-0.
Trotman moved to 17-7 inside the circle with the win after the sophomore held Elmira to just three hits over five shutout innings. Trotman finished with six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
FISHER 8, ELMIRA 0 (Six Innings)
After plating a run in the bottom of the first on a single by Torlish, Fisher doubled its advantage in the bottom of the fourth when Sortisio lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Sardina.
The Cardinals struck again in the fifth with three more runs including a two-run bomb from Torlish that made it 4-0. As the inning continued, Grosvenor collected her third RBI of the day with a single up the middle before Elmira could get off the field.
After a scoreless top of the sixth, head coach
Bari Mance's team capped the game as Kubik crushed a monster three-run walk-off home run to break the record and complete the sweep.
Trotman picked up her second win of the day in the circle and moved to 18-7 with the win. She pitched all six innings and limited Elmira to just one hit overall. Trotman finished the game with five strikeouts.
The Cardinals will play for an Empire 8 Regular Season title at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Stevens Institute of Technology for a doubleheader at the Softball Complex.
