Softball Secures No. 2 Seed In The Empire 8 Conference Championship After Split With Stevens On Senior Day

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team split its final double-header of the regular season as the Cardinals hosted the Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon. After the split, Fisher secures the No. 2 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Championship with a 22-14 overall record, with a 12-2 conference mark, while the Ducks earned the right to host the championship next weekend after moving to 20-16 overall and 12-2 in conference play.

Today's game also marked the team's Senior Day as the Cardinals honored seniors Sam Schermerhorn, Julia Sortisio, Jessica Sardina, Mary Claire Grosvenor, Ashley Prince,

Game 1: Fisher 6, Stevens 1

In the first game of Sunday's double-heading, Fisher extended its winning streak to eight games in a row, with the help of a stellar game from Emily Trotman on the mound as the sophomore as the sophomore notched her 18th victory of the season after only allowing one run over a full seven innings of work.

Fisher came out swinging in the first inning of game one as early hits from Sortisio and Prince quickly put the Cardinals within striking distance. Sammie Torlish got the Cardinals on the scoreboard first as the sophomore drove in Sortisio after beating out an infield hit to the third baseman.

From there, both sides remained scoreless until a Stevens double off of the left field wall in the top of the third inning tied the conference matchup up at one apiece.

In the bottom half of the third, Fisher answered the call as timely hits and smart running loaded the bases. From there, Abby Flakus reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Trotman to score from third.

As the inning continued, Sardina ripped a lining single to right field, scoring Torlish and Flakus to put the Cardinals ahead by three runs.

It didn't take long for the Cardinals to add to their lead as Prince remained hot at the plate, lofting a single to left that scored Maddie Klidonas from third in the bottom of fourth.

Once again, both sides remained scoreless from the next two innings, until Trotman helped herself out with a single to left in the sixth to score Maddy Pepke, giving Fisher some insurance to close out game one.

As a team, Fisher racked up eight hits in the victory, while Trotman struck out one and held the Ducks to six hits.

Game 2: Fisher 4, Stevens 6

As the second game of the double-header got underway, it was Stevens with the hot bats early as the Ducks opened the scoring the first run of the game in the top of the second.

From there, Stevens was able to add to its lead as the Ducks added two more runs in the top end of the third to take an early 3-0 lead.

However, Fisher battled its way back in the bottom half of the third as one-out single from Sortisio brought Trotman to the plate. Trotman would then blast a two-run home run over the left field wall to bring the Cardinals back to within one.

In the bottom of the fourth, Fisher would keep the momentum rolling as Torlish led off the inning with a double to right center. It didn't take long for Torlish to make her way home as a single up the middle from Sardina scored the senior to tie the game back up at three apiece.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, where Stevens used a two-run home run to once again take a two run lead.

Fisher was able to gain some late momentum in the bottom half of the sixth as three-straight hits from Prince, Kubik, and Torlish kicked off the bottom of the sixth. From there, Flakus brought Fisher back to within one as the freshman flied out to deep center, scoring Torlish from third.

However, the Ducks were able to add one insurance run in the top of the seventh as Stevens earned the right to host the conference championship with the victory.

Trotman pitched the full seven innings once again for the Cardinals as the sophomore delivered six strikeouts throughout.

Fisher will now await its opponent for next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Championship as the Cardinals will play as the No. 2 beginning on Friday afternoon in Hoboken, N.J.
