BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior
Sarah Kubik of the St. John Fisher College softball team became the program's all-time leader in RBI on Wednesday as the Cardinals took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against The College at Brockport. With the wins, Fisher climbed to 20-13 on the season while the Golden eagles fell to 11-19 following the sweep.
Kubik, who broke the record with a three-run home run in the third inning of the second game, surpassed
Leanne Merchant's mark of 131 runs batted in, which was established between 2010-2013. Over 174 career games, Kubik has now driven in 133 runs including a conference-leading 30 this season. To date, she needs just four more RBI to break the Empire 8 record. With her two home runs on Wednesday, the Orchard Park native is also closing in on another record as she sits just three homers away from breaking the Cardinals' all-time home run record of 35, which is also held by Merchant.
FISHER 11, BROCKPORT 3
The Cardinals jumped all over the Golden Eagles' starting pitcher in the top of the first with six runs on five hits to hold a commanding lead.
Julia Sortisio inched closer to 200 career hits after leading off the inning with a double before
Emily Trotman reached on an infield single. With two on and no outs,
Ashley Prince stepped in and boomed a three-run home run to give Fisher a 3-0 cushion. As the inning continued,
Sarah Kubik drew a walk and moved into scoring position when
Sammie Torlish singled through the left side.
Abby Flakus kept the momentum going with a two-run double that split the outfielders before
Rachel Evans drove in a run with a ground out to the left side.
Brockport would get a run back in the home half of the first to pull to within five runs as both pitchers settled into a groove that kept the game at 6-1 through the third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Fisher struck again as head coach
Bari Mance's squad put up five more runs on five hits and a Brockport error to open up a 10-run edge.
Jessica Sardina opened the inning with a double to left and came around to score following an RBI-double by
Maddie Klidonas. Soritisio moved the runner up a base with a single before both runners took off with Klidonas stealing home to make it 8-1. From there, Trotman singled to put two on as Kubik clubbed a three-run homer before the Golden Eagles could retire the side.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brockport would come up with two runs, but was unable to put together a big inning as the Cardinals' pitching shut down the comeback effort.
In all, Fisher accounted for 10 hits in the win with Sortisio going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Trotman helped her own cause with a pair of hits while Prince plated three in the win. Kubik was 1-for-2 overall with a home run and three RBI.
In the circle, Trotman moved to 16-7 on the season after going three innings and allowing one run on four hits.
Allison Rogowski pitched the final two innings and surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits.

In the nightcap, Fisher poured it on with a season-high 17 runs and 23 hits as Rogowski moved to 4-5 on the season behind five solid innings. Overall, the freshman allowed four runs on four hits to go along with five strikeouts.
