Men's Volleyball Falls To Wells In Non-Conference Action

AURORA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team was defeated on the road Tuesday evening as the Cardinals fell in non-conference action to Wells College 20-25, 25-21, 26-28, 23-25. With the loss Fisher falls to 20-10 overall on the season, while the Express improves to 23-8 overall in 2019.

As a team, Fisher totaled 50 kills throughout the four-set match, while also finishing with 48 digs and 32 combined blocks.

After falling in the opening set, the Cardinals battled their way back in the second set to tie the match back-up at one set apiece.

The third set began with both sides trading points back and forth until a kill from Matt Broderick knotted the set up at 11-11. As the set continued, Fisher would take 18-15 advantage after putting together a 6-1 scoring run capped off a block by Martin Hackford and Ivan Lopez.

As the third set wore on, Wells would rattle off two separate three-point scoring runs, eventually leading to a 23-23 deadlock on the scoreboard. In the end, it was the Express able to win the race to 28 as Wells was able to take a two sets to one lead into the fourth set.

Once again, the fourth set opened with both sides trading points back-and-forth until the fourth set was knotted at 14-14.

The Hackford sibling connection struck again as Martin Hackford put away his 10th kill of the match, tying the set back up at 19 apiece.

From there, wells took advantage of its timely offense and eventually would earn the non-conference victory after another tightly contested set.

Broderick led the way for the Fisher offense as the junior finished with 14 kills and nine digs. The five-time UVC Rookie of the Week, Josh Bigford, pitched in 12 kills and eight digs, while Mike Strumpfler added eight kills to go along with nine blocks.

Paul Hackford filled the stat sheet as the sophomore notched 39 assists, eight blocks, and eight digs.

The Cardinals returns to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when they travel to New York City to take on the University of California, Santa Cruz, followed by Hunter College at 2 p.m.
