PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team completed a sweep of Houghton College on Thursday afternoon as the Cardinals took home two victories in Empire 8 Conference action. With the wins, Fisher remains atop the conference standings at 9-1 as the Cardinals improve to 18-13 overall. The Highlanders move to 10-20 overall on the season and 5-9 in the Empire 8.
Fisher 3, Houghton 0
Fisher got the game's scoring started early in the conference matchup as
Julia Sortisio and
Emily Trotman opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles. From there, Sammy Torlish ripped a two-out triple off of the left field wall, scoring both Sortisio and Trotman to give the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless for the next four innings until
Sarah Kubik blasted her eighth home run of the season, pushing the Fisher lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
The Fisher defense held strong for the entirety of the game, compiling zero errors and only allowing six Houghton hits throughout the game. Trotman pitched a gem in the first game of the doubleheader, striking out two Highlanders as she earned her 14
th victory of the season.
Seven different Cardinals tallied a hit in the first win of the day, while Sortisio and
Ashley Prince both notched a stolen base.
Fisher 5, Houghton 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams were held scoreless for the first four innings of action as Trotman held a no-hit bid into the top of the sixth inning.
The Cardinal's bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as Fisher would put five runs up on the scoreboard after only recording three hits through the first four innings of action.
Maddie Klidonas started the inning off with a single up the middle, while Sortisio reached first with a beautiful bunt in front of the Highlander catcher. From there, Prince ripped a double to the wall in left center field to score Kidonas and Sortisio, giving Fisher its first lead of the game.
The Cardinals weren't finished there as Torlish added another RBI to her daily total with a single to left, scoring Prince.
Abby Flakus and
Mary Claire Grosvenor kept the hot hitting going as both would notch RBI's before the fifth inning concluded.
Allison Rogowski and the Fisher defense held off a late comeback bid from Houghton, as the Highlanders scored one run in the top of the sixth, followed by one more in the top of the seventh. However, the Cardinals were able hold on for their ninth win in conference action.
Trotman picked up her 15
th win of the season as the sophomore allowed only one hit over 5.1 innings of work, while Rogowski closed out the final 1.2 innings on the mound.
The Cardinals return to the field on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they travel to The College at Brockport for a non-conference doubleheader.
