ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team clinched a berth in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship after posting a 9-0 sweep of Nazareth College on Wednesday at Mendon Racquet and Pool Club. With the win, Fisher, which has now posted three consecutive wins, improved to 4-9 overall and 4-2 against Empire 8 opposition while the Golden Flyers fell to 2-10, 2-2, respectively.
Dustin McCullough and
Jonathan Harper made quick work of their opponents at first doubles behind an 8-3 decision while
John Miller and
Jarrett Pelton took a point at second doubles, 8-2.
Tim Christman and
Jordan O'Connell came out on top at third doubles after beating their opponents, 8-3.
Individually, Miller was victorious at first singles, 6-3, 6-3, while McCullough took second singles, 6-4, 6-3. Harper won at third singles, 6-3, 6-3, while Pelton dropped just one set at fourth singles in a 6-1, 6-0 win. At fifth singles, Christman held on for a point after battling to take the first set, 7-6, and the third and deciding set, 10-7.
Michael Zintel was the winner at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-2.
The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Alfred to take on the Saxons in a critical Empire 8 match.
