Torlish, Prince Collect Five Hits Each; Trotman Nets Two Wins as Softball Sweeps Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team continued to fire on all cylinders as the Cardinals swept both ends of an Empire 8 doubleheader on Friday at Nazareth College.  With the wins, Fisher remained atop the Empire 8 standings at 6-0 as head coach Bari Mance's squad improved to 15-12 overall.  The Golden Flyers finished the day at 7-13, 1-3, respectively.

FISHER 7, NAZARETH 0

After a scoreless first inning of play, Fisher was able to get on the board in the top of the second after plating one run on two hits.  Following an out to lead off the inning, Sammie Torlish, the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week, singled to the pitcher before Jessica Sardina cracked an RBI-double to center that scored Torlish and made it a one-run affair.

With rain moving into the area, Fisher added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning as Maddie Klidonas led off with a double down the left field line.  The Golden Flyers looked primed to escape the jam after getting the next two hitters, but senior Ashley Prince stepped in and smacked a single up the middle to push Klidonas home and give the visitors a 2-0 edge heading to the home half of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Torlish continued to rake as the sophomore belted her second home run of the season to make it 3-0 in Fisher's favor.

The Cardinals struck again in the seventh inning with four more runs on three hits and a pair of Nazareth errors to hold a seven-run edge.  Fisher was aided by a pair on infield errors to begin the inning to put two on with one away for Prince who doubled home Klidonas to make it 4-0.  With two runners still aboard, Sarah Kubik lifted her seventh home run of the season and plated three in the process before the Golden Flyers could get off the field.

Trotman moved to 11-6 with the win after the sophomore pitched a complete-game shutout.  Overall, Trotman allowed seven hits and finished with three strikeouts.

Torlish continued her hot hitting after going 4-for-4 in the win with a home run and two runs scored.  Prince had three hits on the day including a double to go along with two RBI and a pair of stolen bases while Kubik provided much of the offense with her three-run bomb.

FISHER 6, NAZARETH 2

In the nightcap, the Cardinals carried over their hot hitting and opened up a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Torlish collected her fifth hit of the day with an RBI-single that scored Kubik who had led off the frame with a double to center.

Ahead by one run, Fisher tacked on two more in the top of the third with Trotman and Prince each driving in a run to make it 3-0.

Nazareth would end its scoring drought in the bottom of the fourth with a run and would add another in the fifth inning to pull to within one run, but the Cardinals sent seven hitters to the dish in the top of the seventh and produced three runs to take a 6-2 advantage.

Trotman was credited with a win in the second game to move to 12-6 after scattering just three hits over 3.2 innings of work.  Allison Rogowski tossed the final 3.1 innings and was tagged for two runs on six hits overall.

The Cardinals will look to build on Friday's sweep when they host Alfred University at 1 p.m. on Saturday at The Softball Complex in an Empire 8 doubleheader.
