PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 15 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team pushed its winning streak to 10 games on Thursday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Utica at Growney Stadium by a score of 16-4. With the victory Fisher improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8, while the Pioneers fall to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Fisher defense was once again stellar for head coach
Linda Michele as the Cardinals forced 27 Utica turnovers, while allowing five or less goals for the eighth time this season. With the win, Fisher also remains perfect on its home turf, with a 7-0 overall mark.
Mallory Eymer tallied her 100
th career point to open up the game as the junior assisted on
Emily Thompson's first goal of the game at the 26:27 mark.
As the first half of action continued, the Cardinals would score the game's next four goals over the next 10 minutes of play. Putting Fisher ahead 5-0 were goals from Eymer,
Allison Rupp, and
Sydney DeGirolamo.
Utica scored its first goal of the conference matchup at the 16:53 mark, cutting the Fisher lead to 5-1 midway through the opening half.
From there, the Cardinals would score the game's next five goals to increase their lead to nine. Finding the back of the net over the next 10 minutes of game time included Eymer, Thompson,
Mary Grace Doyle, and
Alyssa Sabotka.
The Pioneers would cut the lead to eight at the 5:46 mark, however it was quickly answered by Doyle to give the Cardinals an 11-2 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, both sides were held scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the second half. It wasn't until the 18:05 mark where
Brittany Halpin scored her seventh of the season from the free position. Eymer would then quickly follow-up on the man-advantage, scoring her third of the game and team-leading 35
th of the season.
Trailing 13-2, Utica found the back twice in a row to cut the Cardinal lead back to nine with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.
However from there, the Cardinals would score three more time over the final six minutes of play as Doyle scored twice, followed by Eymer to close out their 10
th straight victory.
Claudia Mocciaro was credited with her eighth win in net for the Cardinals after making one save in the first half, while
Morgan Hayes finished with two saves between the pipes in the second half.
Defensively,
Erin Mills and
Molly Tice led the way with three caused turnovers apiece, while DeGirolamo grabbed a game-high eight draw controls.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Hartwick to take on the Hawks in another Empire 8 Conference matchup.
