Second Half Surge Leads Men's Lacrosse To 17-6 Victory Over Clark University

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team wrapped up its Spring Break trip on Saturday afternoon with a 17-6 win over Clark University. With the victory, Fisher has now won its first four games of the 2019 season and sits at 4-0 overall, while the Cougars fall to 1-3 overall on the year.

The Fisher defense was on lockdown for the entirety of the second half as the Cardinals were able to hold the Clark offense to zero goals and in turn hold onto its lead for the entire second half. Darin Eakins was a wall between the pipes for Dave Dobbins' team as the junior was credited with his fourth win of the season after finishing with 10 saves.

The two-time reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, Ian Evans got the game's scoring started as the freshman scored his 13th of the season at the 10:30 mark. The Jamesville native tailed a game-high eight points in the win, finishing with two goals and five assists.

Clark would rally and answer with three-consecutive goals of their own over the next four minutes of game-time, giving them a 3-1 advantage.

As the first quarter was coming to a close, Nicholas Miller found the back of the net for his 14th of the season, while the Cougars quickly answered back and earned a 4-2 lead.

Fisher was once again the first team on the scoreboard in the second period as Jack Mulvihill ripped a shot off of a pass from Evans, pulling the Cardinals to within one.

Following another Clark goal, the Cardinals would push forward and score four of the game's next five goals heading into the halftime break. Jordan Depetres found the back of the net twice, while Evans and Tucker O'Donnell also tallied goals, putting Fisher ahead 7-6 at the game's midway point.

Roger Panara got the goal scoring started in the second half as the midfielder was able to take the ball the length of the field and laser a shot to the left corner of the goal, giving the Cardinals a two-goal lead.

After a 20-minute sprinkler delay on the field, the Cardinal defense gave the offense some momentum by causing a handful of turnovers, that led to four more goals before time expired in the third quarter. Goal scorers in the third quarter included Miller, O'Donnell, Chance Gates, and Zach Wagner.

Heading into the fourth and final quarter leading 12-6, the Fisher defense continued its strong play holding the Cougars to only six shots in the final period.

The offense continued its dominance as well and were able to find the back of the net five more times before the final horn sounded. Goal scores in the fourth quarter included Evans, Depetres, Gates, Miller, and Alex Hunt.

As a team, the Cardinals caused 19 turnovers and grabbed 45 ground balls, while being successful on 23 of 24 clear attempts throughout the game. Joe Post won 10 face offs on the day and also grabbed a team-high eight ground balls.

Fisher returns to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when it travels to The College at Brockport for another non-conference matchup.
