BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team took down The College at Brockport on Wednesday afternoon for its fifth consecutive win to start off the 2019 season. With the victory the Cardinals improve to 5-0 overall on the season, while the Golden Eagles Fall to 1-3 overall.
As a team, the Fisher offense out-shot Brockport throughout the game 40-28, while the Cardinal defense grabbed 33 ground balls compared to the 22 grabbed by the Golden Eagles.
Nicholas Miller and
Ian Evans once again led the way offensively for Fisher as both would finish with seven points apiece and combined for nine goals throughout the game.
Brockport was the first team on the scoreboard in the non-conference matchup as the Golden Eagles tallied the first goal at the 12:51 mark of the opening period.
From there, Fisher put four straight goals up on the scoreboard as Miller, Evans,
Joe Post, and
Zach Wagner were all able to find the back of the net in the first period. Following a late Brockport tally,
Dave Dobbins's team held onto a 4-2 advantage heading into the second 15-minute period.
The Cardinal defense stood tall in the second period holding Brockport to a zero in the goal column, while the Fisher offense put away another three goals in the period.
Miller scored twice more as the reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week notched a first half hat-trick, while
Jordan Depetres took a feed from
Tucker O'Donnell to push the Cardinals ahead 7-2 heading into the halftime break.
The goal-scoring run would continue for Fisher as the third period got underway, with Miller again scoring two consecutive goals under a minute apart, increasing the lead to seven.
As the third period of play wore on, the Cardinal offense continued its dominance and would find the back of the net four more times as
Chance Gates,
Danny Turck, and Wagner each joined the scoring spree.
Brockport was able to cut the lead to 13-4 as the Golden Eagles put two shots into the back of the net before the third period horn sounded.
However, itt was the
Ian Evans show as the fourth quarter began as the freshman tallied three goals in matter of 24 seconds, all on the man-up advantage pushing his season total to 19.
Brennan O'Brien scored the 17th and final goal for the Cardinals in the final period, while the Golden Eagles added three more under the six-minute mark to close out the game.
Brandon Moore was credited with his first-career victory for the Cardinals in net as the sophomore saw 35 minutes of action and finished with eight saves. Post continued his success in the faceoff circle, finishing 15 of 22 and grabbed a game-high nine ground balls.
Defensively, the Fisher defense caused 18 turnovers throughout the game, while converting on 17 of 20 clear attempts and six of seven on extra-man opportunities.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when they welcome Oswego State to Growney Stadium for another non-conference matchup.
