Men's Lacrosse Earns First Empire 8 Victory with 15-10 Triumph Of Nazareth

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team continued its winning ways on Wednesday night as the Cardinals took down Nazareth College under the lights at Growney Stadium by a score of 15-10. With the victory Fisher improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Flyers fall to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Tonight's win marks the Cardinals' third straight victory over Nazareth, while the 15 goals scored is the most goals scored by a Fisher team in a matchup with the Golden Flyers since their first battle in 2003.

The dynamic duo of Ian Evans and Nicholas Miller was unstoppable once again as Evans finished with three goals and five assists, while Miller scored a game-high six goals with one assist.

Miller got the scoring started for Fisher in the rivalry affair as the sophomore scored the game's first two goals within the opening two minutes of play.

Nazareth was able to answer with its first goal at the 11:46 mark, which was then followed with a goal from each team as Tommy Farry scored his first-career goal to put Fisher up 3-2.

From there, Fisher would go on the offensive as the Cardinals scored the game's next four goals to eventually take a 7-2 lead. Miller, Jack Mulvihill, and Matt Jeffries all found the back of the net during the scoring spree for Dave Dobbins' squad.

As the second period wore on, both sides would trade goals back-and-forth as Tucker O'Donnell notched his eight of the year to put the Cardinals ahead 8-4 as the teams headed into the halftime break.

Both sides were held scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter, until Mulvihill and Evans tallied two goals in a 40-second span to give Fisher a 10-4 advantage.

Following the Golden Flyers' fifth goal, Evans finished off his hat-trick as the freshman found the back-of the net twice more, once on the man-down, while Mulvihill was able to cap off his hat-trick just one-minute later.

Nazareth kept the fight going, however, as the Golden Flyers quickly cut the Fisher lead to 13-6 as the teams headed into the final period.

With 15 minutes to play, Fisher would score a pair in the final frame as Miller found the back of the net both times to bring his season total to a conference-leading 36 goals thus far. The Golden Flyers picked up four goals in the final 15-minutes of play, although Fisher was able to hold on for its first Empire 8 Conference win of the 2019 season.

The Fisher defense was once again a force throughout as the Cardinals caused 15 turnovers with Zach Wagner leading the way with two of them.  Darin Eakins was incredible between the pipes for the Cardinals as the junior finished with a game-high 12 saves to improve his season record to 6-1 overall.

Joe Post finished 13-of-24 in the faceoff circle and grabbed a game-high nine ground balls. Four Cardinals finished with three ground balls including Mulvihill, Jeffries, Roger Panara, and Kyle O'Dea.

Fisher returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. as when it welcomes Elmira College to Growney Stadium for another Empire 8 Conference matchup.
