Baseball Sweeps Elmira to Move to 2-0 in the Empire 8 Standings

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball posted a pair of wins on Wednesday as the Cardinals swept visiting Elmira College in both ends of an Empire 8 doubleheader at Dugan Yard.  With the wins, the Cardinals moved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference standings.

FISHER 6, ELMIRA 0

Freshman pitcher Kenneth Westbrook was nearly unhittable in the win after allowing just two hits over six scoreless innings of work.  Westbrook, who moved to 3-0 on the season, fanned three in the win before being lifted for Tim Geissel who struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning of work.

After three scoreless frames, Fisher jumped ahead in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Brown singled home Antony Mantova who had led off the inning with a walk.

Holding a one-run lead in the fifth, Fisher tacked on two more runs with two hits and an Elmira error.  Thomas Pasquale drew a leadoff walk and scored when Allen Murphy, who surpassed 100 career hits on the day, crushed an RBI-double to left to make it 2-0.  As the inning continued, Michael Beimel would make it a three-run game when he singled to right and scored Murphy in the process.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fisher struck again with three runs as Pasquale plated a run with a single through the left side before Mantova delivered a two-run single to left that made it 6-0 in the home team's favor.

FISHER 11, ELMIRA 5

In the nightcap, the Cardinals jumped ahead early with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.  Ryan Simmons drew a walk to get things going and moved to third following a single up the middle from Beimel.  With two on and no outs, Stephen Edgett reached on a fielder's choice while Beimel was safe at second on a throwing error by the Soaring Eagles' infield.  With the bases loaded and no outs, Andrew Czubaj lifted a sacrifice fly before Justin Graham boomed an RBI-double to make it 2-0.  Brown got in on the action as the junior drove in two with a single to center before Elmira could retire the side.

The visitors got one back in the top of the third inning only to see Fisher answer in the home half of the third when Murphy uncorked his sixth home run of the season to make it 5-1 heading to the fourth inning.

Following a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brown in the fourth that made it a five-run affair, Elmira put together a small rally with two runs on three hits to make it a 6-3 game.  The Soaring Eagles, however, were unable to benefit from a quick inning as the Cardinals countered with two runs of their own to open up an 8-3 edge.

Elmira continued to battle down the stretch and would come to within three runs after plating a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but a bases-clearing double from Ryan Simmons in the eighth blew the game wide open as the Cardinals moved to 2-0 in the Empire 8.

Jared Wren started on the hill and went 4.1 innings where he allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits.  Brandon Roberts earned his first collegiate win after throwing 2.2 innings in relief while Jim Dawson pitched the final two frames and allowed just one hit in all.

Fisher will look to keep its momentum going at 7 p.m. on Saturday when it travels to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in the first game of a three-game series with the Ducks.
