Baseball Unable to Keep Pace in Loss to Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team fell in the opening game of a three-game set to the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks, 16-10, on Saturday at Dobbelaar Field.  With the loss, Fisher slipped to 10-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Empire 8 while the Ducks improved to 8-10 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 standings.

Matthew Raudelunas moved to 1-2 on the year with the loss after the sophomore was tagged for six runs on six hits over 2.2 innings of work.  Kenneth Westbrook gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning while Rylan Baker yielded one run on one hit in a third of an inning of work.  Jason Wasilnak pitched three innings and surrendered five runs on six hits while Spencer Weyand pitched a perfect inning in his collegiate debut.

After a scoreless first inning, the Ducks got to Raudelunas in the second inning to the tune of two runs on two hits.  The Cardinals would answer in the top of the third with a two-run triple from Allen Murphy, but Stevens countered with five runs on four hits in the home half of the third to open up a 7-2 edge.

Trailing by five in the fourth, Fisher was unable to get off the field quickly as the Ducks put up four more runs and extended their cushion to nine runs, 11-2.

Down by nine, Fisher began to chip away in the top of the fifth after Antony Mantova cracked a two-run double that plated Murphy and Thomas Pasquale to make it 11-4.  From there, Stevens scored a pair in the bottom of the frame, but Fisher kept pace as the visitors scored two runs of their own in the top of the sixth including an RBI from Justin Graham to keep it at a seven-run deficit.

The Ducks kept rolling as the game wore on and built a 16-6 lead before the Cardinals made it interesting in the top of the ninth with four runs on three hits.  Pasquale led off the inning with his first home run of the season before Mantova drew a one-out walk.  Ryan Simmons kept the rally going with a single up the middle to put two on while Michael Beimel walked to load the bases.  Following a strikeout, Stephen Edgett's bat came to life as the junior cleared the bases with a three-run double before the Ducks could retire the side.

Both teams will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday as they continue their series with a doubleheader at Dobbelaar Field.
