BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 16 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team won its fourth game in a row on Wednesday evening as Fisher defeated Buffalo State by a score 18-7. With the victory the Cardinals improve to 5-1 overall, while the Bengals fall to 4-2 overall on the season.
Fisher opened the non-conference matchup with the first seven goals of the game, within the first 11 minutes after the opening whistle. As a team, the Cardinals outshot the Bengals 29-11 throughout the game, while also leading in the ground balls category 22-10.
Mary Grace Doyle got the goal scoring started for the Cardinals as the senior scored the first goal of the game only 67 seconds into the matchup. Doyle's tally was quickly followed by goals from
Emily Thompson,
Mallory Eymer, and
Olivia Marziale which pushed the lead to 4-0.
The goal scoring would continue from there as Thompson,
Sydney DeGirolamo, and
Alyssa Sabotka were all able to find the back of the net to give Fisher an early 7-0 advantage.
At the 15:32 mark of the first half Buffalo State put themselves on the scoreboard, cutting the Fisher lead to six goals.
As the first 30-minutes continued, Doyle, Eymer, and
Sara Roman helped increase the Cardinal lead to 10-1 as a little over five minutes remained before the halftime break.
From there, the teams would trade goals back-and-forth with Thompson finishing off her hat-trick as Fisher headed into the locker room with an 11-3 advantage.
As the second half of action got underway,
Logan Chase put the Cardinals on the scoreboard first at the 27:33 mark. Following an answering goal from the Bengals, Chase and Thompson found the back of the net once again, increasing the lead to 10 goals.
Buffalo State was able to answer with back-to-back goals however; the Cardinals came right back with four consecutive goals of their own throughout the second half. Goal scorers included Eymer twice, Thompson, and Sabotka.
The Bengals put away the last goal of the game, but the Fisher defense had itself other strong outing to seal the fifth win of the season.
Claudia Mocciaro was credited with her fifth victory if the season as the sophomore saw the first half of action and made three saves, while
Morgan Hayes saw the second half action and finished with one save.
DeGirolamo led the way with a game-high nine draw controls and three assists, while
Jenna Lippert and
Sarah Miles each caused two turnovers.
Fisher returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes No. 19 Ithaca to Growney Stadium for a non-conference battle between two top-25 programs.
