Asenjo Leads the Way as Men's Basketball Uses 16-0 Run to Sink Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Matt Asenjo poured in 28 points as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team completed the regular season sweep of Stevens Institute of Technology after sinking the Ducks, 89-85, on Friday in Canavan Arena.  With the win, Fisher improved to 7-2 in the Empire 8 standings and moved to 12-6 overall while Stevens slipped to 13-8, 6-6, respectively.

After falling behind by four points to open the second half of play, the Cardinals promptly reclaimed the lead courtesy of a 7-1 run over the first two minutes of play to hold a 41-40 lead.  The advantage changed sides three times over the next 2:08 before an 11-2 burst by the home team staked Stevens to its largest lead of the game, 56-47.

Trailing by nine points with 14:22 still to go in the game, Fisher rattled off 12 unanswered points bookended by 3-pointers from James Leone and Brendan Trapper to jump out to a slim 59-56 edge.  Both teams continued to jockey for the lead down the stretch with Stevens taking the reins after producing a 9-1 run to open up a seven-point cushion, 71-64.

With 6:27 still showing on the clock and facing an uphill climb, Fisher's offense came to life as the Cardinals scored 16 unanswered points as part of a larger 18-3 run that ate up over four minutes of time to vault the visitors ahead, 82-74, with just over one minute remaining.

Down by eight, Stevens pushed the pace and scored back-to-back buckets to pull to within four points, but Fisher had an answer as Sammy Robinson scored three straight points followed by a pair of free throws by Asenjo to move the lead back to seven points with 18 seconds left in the game.

Facing a three-possession hole, Stevens was aided by an old-fashioned three-point play and would eventually pull to within three points, but time ran out on the comeback bid as Dylan Harrington sealed the win at the charity stripe.

In all, four players scored in double figured led by Asenjo's 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor.  The sophomore guard also added four rebounds and four assists in the win.  Robinson finished with 19 points in 20 minutes while Leone chipped in with 13 points and four dimes of his own.  Ryan Henderson netted 10 points overall while the Cardinals' bench came up with 13 points led by Mark Valeriani's six points.

As a team, Fisher continued to shoot the ball well after going 32-of-62 (.516) from the floor including nine makes from downtown.  Fisher forced Stevens in to 21 turnovers on the defensive end of the floor while producing 19 assists overall against just 11 turnovers on their own offensive side of the court.

The Cardinals will return to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday when they look to continue their climb up the Empire 8 standings at The Sage Colleges in Troy.
