Field Hockey Stymies Nazareth On Senior Night To Go 7-0 in the Empire 8

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team held off Nazareth to claim a 3-2 victory on Senior Night. Junior Bre Socker scored two goals while senior Reghan Amoroso netted the other Fisher score. The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 15-4 record and a perfect 7-0 in the Empire 8. Nazareth falls to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in the E8 while clinching the number four seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

The Golden Flyers struck first halfway through the opening quarter. The Cardinals answered with a lot of offense in the second quarter pouring on shot after shot. Fisher could not find the back of the net though and remained down by one heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Fisher was determined to net the equalizer. After five minutes into the third, Amoroso cashed in on a rebound to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard and tie things up at one-all. Four minutes later, Socker snapped a quick backhander that beat the Nazareth net minder to give Fisher its first lead of the evening at 2-1.

Early in the fourth, Socker picked up a bouncing ball and chipped it high over the goalie and into cage to make it 3-1 Cardinals. The Golden Flyers answered quickly to make it a one-goal game again but Fisher was able to milk a lot of the clock with controlling possession. Nazareth had one final chance with less than 30 seconds remaining, however, senior Lindsay Scott intercepted a pass and sent it down to other side of the field to seal the win.

With the victory, Fisher set a new program record for wins at home in a single season with 10. The Cardinals also broke the team record for goals in a single season and now have 68 on the year. Scott had a game-high eight shots on the night while fellow classmate Kelly Bergamo spent all 60 minutes in between the pipes to earn the win.

Along with Scott, Amoroso and Bergamo; midfielder Danila Casseri and graduate student Meagan McDonald were also honored during the senior ceremony before the game

Fisher has its sights on the Empire 8 Championship next weekend. The No. 1 Seeded Cardinals will host Nazareth in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Friday at Growney Stadium.
